What is the best way to store fabric? I currently have my fabric in plastic bins, but am wondering if this ok. A friend said I should air the fabric out every now & then. I'm still new at this. Then I saw in a Quilting magazine to place a cedar block in the lid of the bin. I wonder if it's okay to store in a dresser that I have in the basement which is as also a woodshop which is only used in the winter time. :)

I have fabric in plastic bins but will be moving it to open shelving. I just avoid direct sunlight. Heirloom quilts are on the spare bed and covered with a sheet.

Would putting old quilts in the bags that you suck the air out of be a good idea?????

I noticed today that a nice piece of fleece I have, has liked a dirty line on it where it had been folded. I am sure it will wash out. I have had that on other fabric where I could not wash it out.
Some people fold their material wrong side out to try and avoid this.
The fleece I bought a few years back. Not that many but
it got dirty anyhow.

Wood have a natural oil in them, it is not a good idea to let your fabrics touch them for any length of time :wink:

I have mine stored in tubs and on shelves, in plastic bags too, have not had any problems at all with mold, bugs or stains. I will say that humidity is not a problem in my house though :D:D:D

Please don't put a cedar block in with your fabric. I know you are trying to deter moths, but if the cedar block touches the fabric it will harm it over time. Wood is not acid free.

Our grandmothers would store their quilts in a cedar chest, and so many of them are stained as a result.

I have my fabric folded on corrigated plastic boards, I buy the 4'x8' sheets from the sign store, they will cost about $14.00 each if you buy several. then i use a box cutter to cut them 8" x 12', I can get 48 pieces out of 1 sheet. After cutting i wrap the fabric i place in clear plastic containers with a fabric softener sheet. I keep mine out of the sun. I don't know about storing in the basement. If you do maybe get a dehumidifier just to stay safe.

I keep mine on vinyl shelving in a closet and the door is closed most of the time. Humidity is not an issue in my house.

I store my fabrics in a 48x72" cabinet from Lowes, I open the doors often looking for the fabrics I want to use. I found the big plastic rubbermaid tubs were to heavy and took up lots more space than this cabinet does. Fabrics lots easier to see also.
