I want to make a Storm at Sea lap size quilt. Using 16" finished blocks I would need to make 12 blocks. I can find a lot of information about making the block, but I can't find any information on how much fabric I need to make a complete quilt. Can anyone help me?

Single or double pattern?
Back of the envelope - you'd need approx 4.5 yards total. How many colors do you want, and in which positions in the block? |
We have to know how many fabrics you plan to use and the color placement. There are many different versions of Storm at Sea and endless ways to assemble it to make different secondary designs. Which pattern are you looking at?

I'm thinking the traditional layout using 3 colors (a light, medium, dark). Thanks for helping me. This board is awesome and quilters are the best!

Below is what Quilt Pro came up with based on 16" blocks set 3 across & 4 down. 3 color Storm at Sea 3 color Storm yardage |
Wow - that is fantastic information - Nicely done.

http://bunchofbloomers.com/quilt_stormatsea.shtml EQ is notoriously fickle when calculating non-square/rectangle shapes - and this block has a ton of HST, HRT and diamonds. In descending order of fabric requirements, you'll need the most light and the least of the dark. I've even padded the EQ numbers just a tad more: Light 1.75 yds Med 1.5 yds Dark 1.25 yards Pretty close to the back of the envelope. But I'd probably buy a bit more just to be safe. ;-) And if you're going scrappy, like the picture, you've got a bit more leeway - if you run out, you can just get another FQ. What are your plans for piecing? Templates, rotary cutting, paper-piecing? Just curious. |
Thank you. Storm at Sea is on my to-do list. I prefer the version than MTS posted the link to but it was easier to work up with block borders instead of sashing and it this should give basic information for a 3 color version.

Hi BK - waving!
To Anna - notice that there are different colorations in the two samples - BK's rendition and the picture I linked to - which result in different fabric requirements . Of course, if you get 2 yards of each value - you'll be fine.  |

You might need to sign in at The Quilt Show to see this (and I can't find the image anywhere else), but here is my all time favorite quilt using Storm at Sea blocks:
http://www.thequiltshow.com/os/quilt...lts_id/1002977 Just freaking brilliant!!!! |
BKrenning you are awesome! Thank you SO MUCH, that is exactly what I needed.
|
I made a Storm at Sea quilt several years ago ,loved it did the shades of blue.
|
BK- that's neat!!
|
Thank you MTS! I do like the scrappy version, and I'm NOT a scrappy person. Now you are taking me out of my box. I planned to get the ruler from Creative Grids called Storm at Sea.
|
Hi BK. I just noticed, I think Color 3 is missing from the bottom of each block. I'm guessing that would affect the fabric calculation. Do you mind redoing it? Thanks bunches!

That one at TheQuiltShow is gorgeous. A quilting buddy of mine made a SAS that was VanGogh's Starry Night. She called it Stormy Night.
I know it made it into a quilt show outside of Atlanta this next weekend and I think she is going to try to get it into some others....so you might just get to see it! I've only seen pics and it is Gorgeous too! SAS is on my quilting bucket list! |

I smile every time I see it. I'm looking for a different block so I can try that. I'm actually trying to get to the Atlanta show this weekend - schedule permitting. If not, I'm sure I'll find a picture online. Thanks for the heads up! |

16" finished is the size the Creative Grid ruler makes. I could go 4 x 5. You know how quilters are, flexible!

Below is what Quilt Pro came up with based on 16" blocks set 3 across & 4 down. IMO, a Storm at Sea should only be dark blue, med/light blue and white! |

Thanks GrannieAnnie, I'll keep the blue color scheme in mind. Making it scrappy would give variety, without going out of the blues.

Oops! Here you go. It didn't change the fabric requirements by much. There was a quilt at Paducah one year that used the single sash style and was done in yellows, reds & oranges flowing across the quilt. Firestorm or Heat Wave or something like that was its name. I've also seen it done scrappy, purples, blues, greens and a striking black/white/red. If I ever get around to it myself, I plan to paper piece it and use blues & purples. Thank you BK. You are a dear!

Wow! I found templates for this quilt at a thrift store for 50 cents. My template set makes a 12" block. Will have to try one one of these days. Have a great day, Huggies, Fay
