A story about 2 old quilts.

We were recently in Salt Lake City staying at a motel on our trip out West. I took some clothes to the little laundromat at the motel and began washing them. While I was sitting there, a young man came by with a load and asked me how to work the machines. He had a bottle of shampoo to use as detergent. He was trying to figure out how to wash 2 quilts. He was a truck driver who was at a class in Salt Lake City and had his quilt and his friend's. Since I was using the machines, I offered to put his in when mine were finished and told them that I had extra detergent. He told me that the 2 quilts belonged to him and to his trucker friend. They were made by their grandmothers and they always took them along to keep their bodies warm when they slept in the truck. When I put them in the wash, I saw that they were very old and much loved. It did my heart good!

Very nice of you to help and what a great way for those boys, oh excuse me, Men to stay connected to their Nanas.

AuntieD 07-18-2012 05:06 PM

What a nice story. Their grandmamas must be so proud!!

wraez 07-18-2012 05:09 PM

That is a wonderful story. It was generous of you to be helpful ... something a quilter would naturally do.

bigdogmom 07-18-2012 07:12 PM

One reason I make quilts is for them to be loved and used up!

rrhaigh 07-18-2012 08:09 PM

Ahh, so glad you shared your story. That is heart warming! Especially to hear that from young men & truck drivers! Sweet! And you were so kind to help them out. Also, heart warming!

Quilts on the road....another use we didn't know about, until now....keeping a part of home near by when far away from where your heart is....thank you for this insight...

Yes, yes & more yes!

Good for you and lucky for them! Did you go to any fabric stores in SLC.

Very nice of you. I was a owner/operator (truck driver) for many years. Yes ptquilts, this is a nice way to stay connected to home. Something truckers never seem to get enough of. Long Arm you did a big thing. We truckers move America but are often looked at as second class citizens. I can attest that he felt more more than happy for getting his quilt clean, the touch of human kindness goes a long way. Thank you for helping him!

Can you only begin to imagine the stories those quilts could tell.......and the miles they have traveled !!!;)

Gladys 07-19-2012 01:27 PM

What a great story! Who would have thought? Wouldn't those Grandmothers be proud of their traveling quilts?

T-Anne 07-19-2012 08:22 PM

Thanks for sharing this heart warming story. There is nothing better than wrapping up in the quilt Grandma made for you, no matter how old you are!

marymay 07-20-2012 03:39 AM

That is sweet of you to do.

MargeD 07-20-2012 06:03 AM

Isn't it wonderful to hear a story like that. The first quilts I made for my kids are still with them. My daughter is planning to give our 2 year old granddaughter - Zoe - her quilt as an heirloom - it was a full size quilt and the only one that I was able to handquilt before carpal tunnel got the best of me. I wish I had a quilt that my Mother made, but unfortunately, with 7 children the quilts were "worn out". Thanks for sharing that story and for taking the time to see that the quilts were properly washed.

Great story!! The grandmas would be so happy to know their quilts are loved.

Latrinka 07-20-2012 09:38 AM

Awe, that's so sweet!

karate lady 07-20-2012 09:56 AM

I hope the people who get my quilts feel like this....I will truly be immortal...

Very nice story I enjoyed reading! You are typical of the people that post here, helpful and thoughtful!

jeanharville 07-20-2012 01:37 PM

I'm wondering about the shampoo he was planning on using to wash. I wonder if this was his first time to wash?? I'm so glad you were there to come to the rescue :>)

susansomethings 07-20-2012 01:42 PM

How nice is that!!!!

captlynhall 07-20-2012 03:54 PM

Those quilts had to give a lot of comfort to those long haul truckers. Having a family connection makes the lonely days not quite so lonely. You were so thoughtful in helping with the washing, and because of it you were able to come away with a heart warming story that all of us can appreciate. Thanks to you and to them.

We never know where a gift of love may eventually end up

Same thought I had, I could just visualize those washers overflowing if they had used shampoo.
But I do use a few drops of shampoo for handwash on occassion.
And so happy they love their quilts!

What a great story! I love to read about people who use and love their quilts.

tammyg 07-21-2012 06:09 PM

That's nice...... ;-)

Nanaquilts44 07-21-2012 06:27 PM

It is such a warm thought that these men travel with their grandmother's quilts. And you were nice to help out and be a friendly soul so far from home.

#1piecemaker 07-21-2012 06:34 PM

That is such a nice story. I'm glad you helped them out. I bet grandma would be happy to know that someone helped him wash it up right.

Raine 07-21-2012 07:48 PM

What a beautiful story. Seems that was a lesson for us. We enjoy the process of taking the time to cut, piece and quilt with material and hope that it is appreciated because we do what we love. Those to men just showed us that what we do will be appreciated wether we get to see it in our life time or not. I am touched and grateful by your story. Thank you. And it was nice of you to offer your detergent. It showed them that they had reason to cherish what their grandmother did for them. We are all connected to love.

lisalovesquilting 07-22-2012 04:08 AM

What a heartwarming story. Thanks
