Beautiful work.. I do a lot of handwork, but mostly on the tops I have of my DGma... She left a number unfinished.. For my quilts, that we use and not just look at I use the machine..

If I did all handwork like you do, I'd never have a quilt of my own... I'd be lucky to finish my grandma's. I love your work, it looks just perfect. I'm inspired and awed just looking at it. Thanks for sharing.

adrianlee 07-30-2010 08:35 PM

Not weird, never say that. Just really really talented.

JCL in FL 07-30-2010 09:17 PM

I've never seen a quilt with no binding before. That is so nice.
A seam ripped is my best friend!! I enjoy hand work the most and could do without the machine before I could the ripper.

IBQUILTIN 07-30-2010 10:01 PM

I don't think weird is a good description. Awe inspiring might come close. Wish I had your patience

wvdek 07-30-2010 11:16 PM

You are definitely more than a confident beginner which I call myself.

We all have our own way of doing things. Weird? No, but if you are, so are the rest of us.

You have just learned to do things more simply and pretty darn good I might add. You are happy, productive, and do beautiful handwork and that is what matters.

TanyaMas 07-30-2010 11:41 PM

Ive never seen anything like your work before.
Every time i see a thread posted by you, i look... just to be in complete awe of your work. I am completely amazed at how gorgeous your quilts are :D
The detail and intricate designs are fascinating to me especially to know it is all hand done.
I for one would like to give you a standing ovation. :D

How wonderful to be so talented.

Tweety2911 07-31-2010 02:59 AM

Your quilting is beautiful and you are a very talented quilter without all of the clutter/stash, etc to bog you down. Somehow I started out with only a dream and six years later can't find anything amonst the stash/cuttes/rulers/books, etc aquired over time.

Talented - Not Weird

Sewze 07-31-2010 05:27 AM

I use everything that you don't use and nothing you do use. LOL

MillieH 07-31-2010 05:45 AM

I like your "knife edge" look. I think I'll try that on some baby quilts.

Annz 07-31-2010 06:10 AM

You are very talented and creative, not wierd.

Borntohandquilt 07-31-2010 07:13 AM

Thank you so much for all your nice and friendly comments. You really encourage and inspire me to go on with my quilting work. This is what I want to do and I am very thankful that I have the possibility to do it.

JudeWill 07-31-2010 10:56 AM

Awesome! You are not weird--you are an individual!

irenecarter 07-31-2010 11:27 AM

I admire someone who is so talented to be able to do such beautiful work. You quilt like my grand mother use too, and she had some of the most beautiful quilts. I wish I had your talent. I'm only starting in this field and have so much to learn, I'm no where near being able to do it by hand. Probably never will. Your work is absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!!!!

Nimble Thimble 07-31-2010 01:30 PM

you have a talent that is beyond comparson to all others. it is truly a craftmanship.Keep up the great work , Nimble Thimble

I don't think you are weird or strange- i think you are an individual with her own God-given talents. If everyone was the same THAT would be weird.

There is nothing weird about you, you just have your own style. Believe me, it is something that a lot of us wish we could do. Maybe someday.

I think your work is beautiful. Your not weird just like perfect work.

KarenBarnes 07-31-2010 06:37 PM

You may be a strange one but your work is absolutely beautiful so I say whatever works for you is just perfect!

hsquiltingmom 07-31-2010 06:42 PM

I, too, love hand quilting. When I go places that I may not be able to take my machine, I try to make sure that I have something that I can take with me. My hubby was in the hospital during July for open heart surgery and there were times I was glad to have something to work on. So many people looked at the quilt I was working on and told me how pretty it was. It is great to have such a wonderful talent.

Rosyhf 07-31-2010 06:47 PM

You work is beautiful. Lovely stitch work...

OHSue 08-01-2010 07:28 AM

Wow, whatever you do keep doing it, the piece you showed was beautiful. If my handstitching looked that good I would do it that way, too.

kjym 08-01-2010 09:34 PM

Beautiful you do a wonderful job. You are quite a artist.
I could never hand quilt every time I hand sew something even put a button I poke myself so much I bleed all over what ever I work on.
I would end up with a white with red spots all over the quilt.
You are very talented. I don't see how you can do all that by hand and such a beautiful job.
All I can say is WOW. kjym Kathy

I love your work... totally awesome...
My question is how do you distribute the weight of the quilt without having to set up a table?

Leota, I am not quite sure what you mean exactly... while quilting? I use a hoop on a stand and the weight of the quilt hangs on the hoop, not on my shoulders.
Is that what you want to know?

juneeloonee 08-02-2010 03:08 AM

I just went to your website. What beautiful work you do! Very talented. The look of wholecloth quilting is so mesmerizing - you really get caught up in the pattern. Thank you for sharing your wonderful wierdness. (I really don't think you're wierd, just very gifted.):-)

I have an 18" round hoop (not on a stand) and the weight of the quilt that is not in the hoop pulls on the whole thing which makes it difficult for me to quilt. I have to set up the card table to rest the un-hooped portion of the quilt on. This dominates the livingroom or where ever I'm working. I feel I'm constantly trying to quilt during a tug of war. I have the pattern to build me a quilting frame but I don't have the space right now to set it up even if I had it built.

Borntohandquilt 08-02-2010 09:57 AM

My hoop also have 18" but the stand carries the weight of the quilt. I know some quilters who use an ironing board to put the quilt on and they do fine with it. Others sit on the couch and arrange the quilt around them.
Maybe you could also try a 14" hoop - because of the smaller diameter it's easier to handle.
These are the only suggestions I have for you... :?

farmerswife 08-02-2010 10:33 AM

I think what you do is unique. Your work is pretty.

hobo2000 08-02-2010 10:41 AM

Recently , at quilt shows, I have seen beautiful quilts like yours and they never get an award. Everyone of them should have a blue ribbon for awesomeness, new word. The corner you show would take me weeks to finish and I have done everykind of needlework in my lifespan. I made, by hand, 5 little flower girl dresses, all white, french sewing, millions of tucks, inset lace, the whole nine yards but I would even think of doing what you do everyday. I am your humble servant, where would you like your tea?

Poodles 08-02-2010 04:08 PM

Your work is beautiful. I would be lost without a seam ripper, and I can't hand stitch and won't be able too use sewing machine much longer if I don't get my carpul tunnel fixed. The hand is in bad shape from walking on crutches.
I have a granddaughter in Germany that I haven't seen in 10-12 years and she has two little girls that I have never met. One starts too kindergarten this year and I have a box of clothes and school supplies waiting for my next check too try too send them. She has recently moved so I am waiting on her too email me her new address.

Joeysnana 08-02-2010 04:52 PM

Borntohandquilt, when I learned to quilt in the early 80s, we did it just like you do, though not so talented. Then when I took up quilting again recently after being away from it for many years, I was astounded to see how machine quilting has become so popular. I am trying to make friends with my sewing machine, but hand quilting will always be my first love.

Elsie Blight 08-03-2010 05:32 PM

l have never heard of a knife edge before at the moment l am talking to a few of my aussie quilting friends about the way you finish off your quilts l am fasinated with your quilt ad the way you quilt thank you for sharing

I've just started again to teach handquilting after a break of about 4 years. (I didn't have the time because of a fulltime job) Handquilting seems to start a revival here in Germany - but wholecloth quilting is still very rarely done.
I love the traditional quilting patterns with all their varieties so much and I see it somehow as my mission to keep them alive and to show them to other interested people. Hopefully I can manage to do so.

Are your classes, daily or are they retreats?. That would be sweet to have a week long retreat and then see a little of your beautiful country...
