String blocks
I have 25 string blocks. They are put together in rows with 1.5 inch sashing. Of course it makes a square quilt. Can I make my horizontal sashing 2.5 inches wide to make it longer. Would this look really odd.

It is your quilt -- you can do what you want!

I'm with Nammie. I needed more space to add my niece's name on this quilt so I made the top & bottom borders wider than the sides. I think it looks fine & my one (now 3!) year old niece has yet to complain! :p

I agree you could make the sashing wider. But why don't you just add another row of string blocks?

Either add an extra row or add a border with a different block top and bottom or just make top and bottom wider all would look fine.

Bree123, that's a really adorable quilt you made for your niece! |
I was trying to use my more "feminine" type blocks. LOL. Mine are mostly darker masculine colors. Guess I can make another row.

I make some of my top borders bigger then my sides. Works out fine. For some reason I personally do not like my quilts to be square! If I have a pattern that is square I mess with it until I have a rectangle!

I do a lot of charity quilts and I just add another row of blocks.
