string quilt
I just finished my first string quilt and used light weight fabric for the foundation. Now that it is done it feels heavier than normal due to the extra fabric. I'm concerned it might be really heavy after the batting and the backing goes on. Is there a lighter weight batting I could try (other than polyester) I usually use warm and natural. thanks for your help

You could skip yhe batting and it would be just right for summer months.

I agree, no batting is necessary, though a layer of flannel would work if you want a batting (be sure to shrink it first!). You could back it with fleece and not use a batting too.

I’ve made a couple of string quilts with muslin foundation. I used Warm and Natural and cotton back and the weight is fine, not too heavy at all.

I no longer use muslin for a foundation. I use Pattern Ease. It is lightweight, inexpensive and stays in the quilt, not torn out like a paper foundation. I've made 100's of string quilts using Pattern Ease and used them without issue.

When I make string quilt's I use a foundation of water soluble Pellon. it can be somewhat expensive for some, but with a Joann's coupon it makes it affordable. Once pieced and quilted, the Pellon dissolves and washes away.

Batting from Walmart is thinner. I believe it is Fairfield brand

How big is the quilt? If it is twin sized or smaller, I think the extra weight is a positive. The extra weight is very calming for children, and, in fact, they sell weighted blankets for this purpose.
Depending on who is receiving the quilt and the size, this may be a happy accident! |
I use Quilter's Dream Request. It's a very thin lightweight cotton batting. If you think that will be too thick, just use flannel. I've done that and it works fine. I'd recommend pre-washing the flannel. Flannel tends to shrink a lot.

I went through a phase where i forgot the batting in some baby quilts. They were backed with a minkee or fleece and i just billed them as easier to wrap around the babe!
No harm. No foul! |
