I did my String X quilt without foundation piecing, but I made the width wider than I wanted and then trimmed them up to be straight. I wasn't overly concerned that the horizontal seams were exact, but they stayed pretty even anyway.

Not all my strips started the same length although most were semi-consistent in width.

Love strip quilts. Made a Buggy Barn churn dash out of homespun and then used all the strips for a foundation strip quilt. One of the best I have ever made. Love it.

Please, please show us this when you are finished. It will be lovely, I'm sure.

Couldn't you sew the burgundy strip at any angle using a stitch and flip method before you cut the block? Wouldn't that give it stability? Just a thought.

Well, the machine I was using won't be back here for about a week. Foo. So, you'll all have to live in suspense for a little while longer.

I'm sure that it's harder on you than the rest of us!

I have done, just whatyou are suggesting - String piece some blocks, without foundation, then cutting and inserting. It works quite well, but I would suggest you do a bunch of blockes, then PRESS before slicing and inserting -- I actually had not thought of a foundation, and it worked out very well.

Rose Bagwell 10-25-2011 02:23 PM

I have done both , some sewn directly on background fabric and others just sewing strips to gether, then batting , backing fabric and quilt or tie.

My first string quilt I used a muslin foundation. I hand quilt and the extra layer made the quilting tedious so the next couple I made I sewed the strips together and had my plastic square close at hand to make sure I had the pieces long enough then I spray starched them and squared them up, it worked fine and made it so much easier to quilt through. I don't think you need a base unless the fabric is really wonky. Here's an example

After all the years I spent in Kindergarten I can testify that's not a joke. And speaking of starch/snot--you ought to see how stiff sleeves become when used as handkerchiefs. (Then there're the green icicles. If you don't know about them, I'm not going to tell you.)

Seriously, I'm planning on making my next quilts without quilting. That will definitely include foundation pieced strips on either old percale or muslin sheets or cotton sheet blankets. Then a lining--tacked, tied or buttoned.

What a wonderful idea-I doubt I would have come up with that.

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the great ideas and advice. I cannot wait to get my machine back! The awful thing about bringing it into the shop was that I started looking around at all the other machines I would love to have -- and really shouldn't even think about getting.

THE MILE A MINUTE QUILT MADE WITH JELLY ROLLS DO NOT HAVE A FOUNDATION.

They don't need a foundation. It's quite different when you're dealing with micro strips and bias edges.

Krystyna 10-28-2011 12:54 PM

Trying to find my camera, so I can show you what happened so far and why I desperately need my machine back so I can quilt the heck out of this -- it NEEDS it!

stephaniequeen 10-28-2011 10:15 PM

I have never used foundation when piecing a string quilt...never used starch either......hope the quilt police aren't around! The quilt turned out just fine!

Well, at long last, here's the end result of that string quilt I started eons ago. At least it's done.

sewbeadit 12-05-2011 01:00 PM

It is perfectly fine to not use a base, just what you prefer to use. The base does add weight to the quilt. Just make sure when you stitch that you leave a good seam width so it doesn't ravel apart. Otherwise go for it.

Vicki W 12-05-2011 01:22 PM

I love it Krystyna, I love green.

mom-6 12-05-2011 01:33 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the main reason to use a foundation fabric was if you were using a really thin fabric (like batiste or voile or some of the vintage cottons). If you are using regular weight fabric I don't see a need for it.

mucky 12-05-2011 01:42 PM

If they aren't on the bias I don't see any need for a foundation. Could to the 1600" jelly roll quilt too. Just add a few more inches to make it larger.

Geri B 12-09-2011 05:14 AM

if you really feel uncomfortable not stabilizing.....maybe a non woven fusible interfacing - very thin - might help stabilize those strips and not add a lot of bulk to the finished product. I use the non woven when doing t-shirt quilts...keeps the knit from stretching.........

lillybeck 12-09-2011 05:54 AM

I have done one like this without backing and it is fine. I did starch and I did set every seam.

gollytwo 12-09-2011 05:56 AM

I didn't know I was supposed to use a foundation piece on my first string quilt - turned out fine and has survived many, many machine wash and drys.
Did not starch it either - I never use starch - I think it attracks icky things like silverfish.

Browngirl 12-09-2011 06:50 AM

I didn't use a foundation piece. I just sewed them together (they were random sizes and widths) then I took my 8 inch square ruler placed it on a diagonal and cut then sached them together with black tied it and gave it to my neighbor. I will see if I have a picture and post it. I was happy with it. Not done the way it should have been but I liked it and so did the neighbor.

Hi,
I just made three, string quilts and mine were also 2" strips. I just joined the strips, short , med, long, etc. then sewed them side by side. I did not use foundation , I did press very well before I started to quilt it. I made a King size, and two twin size, sold them at our church Craft Sale.

Starch does attract bugs, but if you wash the quilt when it's done it will be fine. Just avoid STORING quilts or fabric with starch in them.
