stringquilt quilt top quilting design

Any suggestions as to what design to handquilt on string quilt top? The blocks are 10 1/2 quilt blocks with no sashings.

There are a lot of seams on string quilts so I would do a line design to go down the center of the strings. Maybe a zig zag pattern would look nice, kind of like lightning?

My first impression is the same, lots of seams. Best to try and avoid them and your quilting will probably not be very noticable on a string quilt so I would keep it simple. Depending on your batting space requirement I would thing maybe and straight line along a few of the strings, are your blocks made so it could look like a pin wheel?

With all those seams, I would suggest you give another thought of NOT hand quilting this quilt. It might not even show up being that string quilts are so busy.

so how do I put the backing and batting together if I don't quilt the top? Ive never made one of these and Im still learning quilting methods.

no, Im just using a solid white down the middle and going from there. Im using muslin scraps for the foundation instead of paper.

It would help to see a picture of the quilt. The first thing that came to my mind is the fan pattern or grandmothers fan.

On my LA I use a simple edge to edge meander. I have had no problems, once in a while you will cross a intersecting line (four seams meeting) and it might hesitate but then keep going.

My granddaughter made one using phone book pages as her guide. This was her lesson in 1/4" seams and value. She did great and I'm so proud. We also wondered about how she would handle the quilting. So, I ended up teaching her how to tie it. It is such a busy quilt that we felt this was the perfect solution.

I haven't made the quilt blocks yet. I am just getting started on the blocks. Ive was given a lot of calico scraps and thought this would be a quick quilt to make.
