Since this topic has come up many times  I came across this strip cutter that uses 45mm blades like our rotary cutters. It can cut extremely wide strips, too.

It looks like a nice cutter/ruler. It would be nice to know how far below the ruler the blade goes while cutting. This will be the difference between cutting one layer of fabric and six!

Tippy 10-22-2009 11:33 PM

Well, it says for cutting "thin" things.. so I'm thinking probably not 6 layers at once.

joeyoz 10-23-2009 07:03 AM

From reading the ad, it might cut 3 or 4 layers. It says it will cut thin cardboard. And up to 36 inches.

Just received mine today that Teacup found on the net from Nancy's Notions. Pd full price for it but it sure is slick. I tried 6 fat quarters and was straight as an arrow. They are going to be hard to find cause fiskars has stopped making this one, only has Donna Dewberry's. The 24" is the size ruler I use everyday so it is nice that the cutter is built in. It's part of my xmas present from my hubby. LOVE IT!!!

Moonpi 10-23-2009 11:54 AM

Do these let you cut angles?

harrishwhippets 10-23-2009 02:06 PM

They have angle markings on it, but I honestly have not tried. It has a 30, 45 and 60 degree marking, the only thing that kinda is stumping me is how to cut an inch or 1 1/2 since the cutter is over those markings. I'm sure I'll figure out. It's just nice not to always be looking for my rotary when I'm finished with it, this is built in. I'll be playing with it soon, still under the weather.

Olivia's Grammy 10-23-2009 03:22 PM

I must be missing something here, why the stripper cutter instead of the ruler and rotary?

harrishwhippets 10-23-2009 03:35 PM

1st reason, safety for me, can cut smaller pcs more comfortably with less slippage. I just cut 6 layers of 2" squares out of 48" strips in a juffy. My large 6x24" requires a lot of pressure to not slip and some day I'm sure I'll come off that ruler and across my hand. This may not be for everybody but for someone as clumsy as me it works. And like I said before, I really have a problem finding my cutters on my table after I use them, never lay them in the same place, this is great it's one unit. So right now my side winder and this are two of my favorite tools.

Oh by the way, How cute is Olivia!!!!!

Thank you we think so, she is 4 months old. So I guess I'll be looking for a Strip Cutter. My hubby says if I don't have the latest gadget it's because I heard of it. Just bought the Side Winder, because the bobbin winder on my machine started acting ugly. Just got it back from the repairman and forgot to tell him about the bobbing winder. It was cheaper to buy the Side Winder with the 1/2 price coupon at Joann's then go back to the repairman. Does Joann's sell the Strip Cutter, I wonder?

harrishwhippets 10-23-2009 03:50 PM

No, at least mine don't, some one posted that her walmart still had them, you may want to contact her, it's on the last post about this. I pd 62.00 and change for this bloody thing, when my Walmart reduced them to $10.00. I like this one because it's my go to ruler size at 24", someone posted a link to a 36 for less, but it has to be cut sideways on my table making it uncomfortable for me to cut. Bought mine from Nancys notions. I've got a little grandaughter coming in March, God willing, can't wait, your blessed.

I am looking at them because I think it would be easier on my hands...cutting the usage of the rotary down drastically... I want to be able to go somewhere and test drive a couple of them

harrishwhippets 10-23-2009 04:28 PM

Amma, I hope you have better luck than I did, maybe a walmart might have one. Mine did not, some places carry the 12" Donna Dewberry but again not around here. Hope you find some, mine is discontinued and that is from the Friskars company, I emailed them. It for sure helps my hands. Good luck to you

amma 10-23-2009 04:41 PM

Thank you...I do ok right now with the rotary and ruler...but it won't be long before I may not be able to...so I am thinking ahead

littlehud 10-23-2009 04:52 PM

That is an interesting tool. It's more money than I want to spend right now though.

amma 10-23-2009 05:08 PM

Me too...but I thought I had better start looking and throwing change and $1 bills in a jar...so that in the future I will be able to keep quilting :D

Melinda in Tulsa 10-24-2009 10:28 AM

I got my mine (fiskars) at walmart for $32

harrishwhippets 10-24-2009 10:42 AM

I understand some Walmarts may still have them, mine reduced them to $10.00 two weeks ago cause they could not sell them. Where were these posts 3 weeks ago. Oh well my husband said it was worth the money for him not to pay for an emergency room visit, he watched me strip a bunch of bingings a while back and wondered why I have not cut my self yet. Kind of clumsy.

harrishwhippets 10-24-2009 10:43 AM

That was bindings, sorry!

Melinda in Tulsa 10-24-2009 10:49 AM

Wow, $10! I might need to take a trip to Walmart for an extra one, especially if they have been discontinued<g>

Olivia's Grammy 10-28-2009 04:13 PM

I found a 24" strip cutter at Walmart's today marked down to $15.00. Can't wait to try it out. Thanks for telling me about this tool.

amma, i emailed the company re: their return policy. since they specifically call it a paper-cutter, i worry that it won't hold an edge for fabric. they referred me to their printed return policy text on their website. twice. it really doesn't address my question. it doesn't say anything about returning it if it isn't what you expected or if it doesn't do what you expected. since they don't say anything about fabric, i don't think they'd accept it back if it doesn't cut fabric well after a short time. i would love to have something like this, but i'm afraid to take the chance on a scrapbooking item and use it for fabric. the only one i saw for fabric was at a show, adjusted for any angle, but cost over $150. i don't know about the one at walmart...wether it's the same one or not. but i won't buy from walmart until they stop outsourcing everything they sell. i guess it wasn't meant to be mine, right?

Amma, when you do please let us know how it went. With fibro, I'm thinking since I have 6 grown kids, that I want to make laps and at least 3 full size, and then there are the 4 grandbabies...and more...
if this product is good, and replacement blades are not too much, it might save me a lot of cutting, plus a lot of BENDING OVER. It really gets me in my back and shoulders to cut out a whole quilt.
With rulers and rotary, you have a lot of placing ruler, checking and rechecking, even with the sandpaper on rulers...to make all those cuts.
This could be invaluable for someone like me :D

Olivia's Grammy 11-02-2009 12:24 PM

I just bought the strip cutter and have started using it. A couple of things I will do differently the next time I use it. One, I think I need a slightly lower cutting surface to use the strip cutter. I have three different levels of cutting surfaces. It put a little to much strain on my shoulder. I could only cut through 4 layers of fabric and not all of them cut. I think a lower surface would help that. Also, the one I have, the widest I can cut is 6 1/2". BUT after making these changes I think I will like it and I feel that it will cut more acurately.

harrishwhippets 11-02-2009 01:12 PM

I had to move mine from my regular table from my sewing room to my dining room table. The reason is the sewing room table must have a slight bow in it and had trouble cutting through. So I take it and the mat to the dining room table with better sucess.

hi Olivia's gramy and Harriswhippets,
Do you guy's feel that the blade on these, is the same blades that we use in our rotary cutters?
If that is so, then I don't see why they wouldn't last a good while if I just used it on fabrics and no paper.
This could be a very good thing for me.
I have one I use for paper and pictures etc. and I love it. Has three guides and super fast.
I like to keep pictures from magazines and put them in notebooks, etc.
Cuts down on a lot of messing and gauming to get something squared.
This strip cutter tool could be awesome for a fussy cut motif square/diamond! :D

harrishwhippets 11-02-2009 01:26 PM

Mine should be a fiskars rotary blade size 45, cause that's who makes it. Works pretty slick, but the surface has to be completely flat. My big folding table has just the slightest bow and isn't cutting well even with my rotary's. Have to line everything up to the middle of the table where there must be a brace. Other than that it's fine. Did 6 pcs of fabric the other night. Cut like butter. But I cut all of my fabric 3 colors the wrong sizr. Grabed the binding ruler instead of the 3" ruler and cut up all fabric. Did not know this until I tried to pc them to my 9" squares. Was making a warm wishes quilt. Had to go back and make all my squares 6". My goof for the week, hopefully.

harrishwhippets 11-02-2009 01:28 PM

I'm sure this is going to help me keep all my strips and squares consistant. And I don't worry about my cutter slipping.

butterflywing 11-02-2009 02:18 PM

my niece said that she would take it for scrapbooking if i don't like it. or she would share if i wanted to. so i'm getting it and if i don't like it, she'll get it. i don't want to share. in my experience, that never ends well. i'm ordering now.

harrishwhippets 11-02-2009 02:44 PM

Good Luck, No walmarts in your area. I do know you don't like to shop there, but it is a huge savings.

butterflywing 11-02-2009 02:52 PM

no, i won't. but if mara is wiling to take it off my hands, i'll get it. i buy very little at full price, so over the course of my lifetime, how much am i really saving by gong to a discount store for this item?

btw, there is a huge walmart superstore walking distance from my house. i'll just do without something else if i have to to make up the difference. really. but thanks for the advice. i know the savings are very good.
