ok so my best friend sent me up her baby quilt she made for me to quilt. My birthday gift to her. BUT the thing is I am stuck as to what to do on it . Well maybe not so stuck but as intimidated to quilt it .Basically squares within squares and the border she did a ribbon with bows in all four corners. pink and black fabrics turned out gorgeous. Maybe someone can give me an idea

How much quilting do you want to do on it.

Holice 06-05-2010 12:04 PM

how large are the individual blocks

cassie69emt 06-05-2010 12:07 PM

Willing to do whatever amount of quilting will make it look great and the blocks are12 "square

Maybe diamonds on the square that widen with each row within the block?

Are you quilting it on a long arm? What about quilting concentric circles inside the squares to give it some movement? Or any design that has some curves to it so that your eyes move around the quilt. Just a thought....

cassie69emt 06-05-2010 04:31 PM

I thought about doing something with curves. I am doing it on a grace frame with a juki 98q sewing machine with stitch regulator

I might quilt a spiral on each block, you know-- start in the center and go round and round and round about an inch apart, like a giant cinnamon bun. Then wI might quilt smaller C-spirals on the borders like this

I was thinking something like that just not sure how mine would turn out

Oh gosh, this will be a challenge. Such a dark quilt for a baby quilt too. Are the blocks seamed with a crosswise seam resulting in each block having four sections? Wonder what an echo of each individual triangled portion would look like? StitchinJoy's idea of round&round bun sounds good. This quilt needs movement and, like you, I am at a total loss too. Good luck and let us see your finished project.

It seems like you've gotten some good suggestions & I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Your machine does 6" across at a time?

wsquilting 06-05-2010 06:30 PM

What about something free hand that resembles this:

cassie69emt 06-06-2010 08:38 AM

yes it does about 6" at a time I think I am going to do the cinnabon idea in the blocks now to figure otu the border lol

I'm seeing two ways to quilt this top. (1) An edge to edge floral design using a dark lavender thread (the top's colors look like lavender and navy on my computer). (2) Stitch in the ditch along the seams of the squares then meander the outside borders. The main thing is to do what you are comfortable with and have fun doing it!

Bobbielinks 06-06-2010 08:49 AM

Hey, WSQuilting, I just pulled up the link showing the design you would choose. That is the same one I was thinking about. Great minds think alike! LOL

Overlapping circles all over but not in straight rows.
Or circles in the block, 3 or 4 starting small ,enlarger each addition.

What color is the top? It looks green to me.

You can lighten it up a LOT with thread color. Lighter thread will give it a lighter look. If it's dark, a bright thread will really spark it up.

Oh, hi, my name is Donna and I'm a threadaholic.

good idea, all you long arm people...but what if ur hand-quilting :?:

StitchinJoy 06-06-2010 10:23 AM

If I was hand quilting this one, I would use saucers and plates and make concentric circles and quilt around them, or I would stencil a very simple wreath on each block and hand quilt it-- something circular to balance the graphic squareness of the piecing.
