Oh.....

I love ontherivers idea of making more so that it can be eaten the next day when she is working on a project.... I am going to try that!

As for stashing.... yes I do and it is the same with the pantry and freezer.... could live for a few months with the stocks (I rotate of course).... but as a newish quilter I have only recently started keeping the scraps. This is because I have bought some patterns that have applique and only require small pieces and learning from all of you out there has helped!

My cubboards are full if you like peanut butter, trisciuts, and kashi cereal. My DH buys these about every week, and esp when on sale. He shops and will stop by the store any night of the week, and calls me everyday before he leaves work to ask if we need anything. We have fruit and meats in the freezer. The cupboards are stocked with the basics for baking and there are mixes on hand for the occassional extras.
Likewise, my stash grows. I do use out of it. If I can make the entire project out of my stash, I do that first. But 9 x's out of 10, I don't have the right thread, so I still need to go to the store. While there I have been known to buy fabric that I believe will go better than my first choice, and will get home and decide that my first choice was still the best. So, my stash grows. I have the fabric for at least 4 projects that I chose the fabrics for, but have yet to do the projects. Are those UFO's if you haven't started them? I don't know.

Tinabodina 08-14-2011 12:04 PM

My pantry and freezer is stocked. My fabric is stocked and if I never purchase another piece of fabric, I could make 20 queen size quilts. Thread too.
We eat left overs, because we were once so poor, all I had to feed pur 4 year old was a slice of cheese and a piece of bread. (Look into a 4 year old eyes sometime that is hungry, that is when I swore to myself I would never be in that position again.)
My DH loves that I don't "SHOP" for things that we don't need and loves my ability to have the same thing 7 different ways. I am very organized, everything in it's place, and not a bunch of clutter. My "4 year old" is now 42 and even though we are far from rich, we never do without.
My grandmother always said, "waste not, want not," and she was so right. As for scraps of fabric, anything 2 inches or bigger is still useful. Old hands can't handle anything to much smaller.

ShabbyTabby 08-14-2011 12:21 PM

My cup runneth over....my cupboards are always stocked, as well as the freezer. I hate starting to make a dish and not have all the ingredients on hand. I have a large stash of fabric as I don't drive anymore and shopping isn't easy for me so shop online and I must confess, I'm have never met a pretty fabric I didn't want !!! LOL

teacherbailey 08-14-2011 01:20 PM

I keep big scraps (around 5-6" square or more), give the smaller ones to the art program at my school, and eat leftovers for lunches or dinners the next day.

lenette 08-14-2011 01:33 PM

You brought back a memory. A few years ago, the mother of my daughters friend was saying how much she liked to sew. Always wondering how people dealt with their leftovers and stash, I asked her where she kept them. Are you ready? In the seat of the stool that she sits on at her machine!

Needless to say, I knew then she wasn't a serious sewer.

I started stashing when I was 13 years old.

MadQuilter 08-14-2011 01:39 PM

Pantry - what pantry? I do have some errand cans of assorted food stuffs but not enough to make a meal out of. On the other hand, I have been making myself use up the food stash and then I plan to replenish. When we remodeled the kitchen I found some cans in the corner that had moved with us from the old place. So we are talking decades old. Not doing that any longer.

I am trying to do the same with my fabric stash. Use what I have and only buy supplemental pieces.

GGinMcKinney 08-14-2011 02:17 PM

Make menus using food in freezer & pantry. Buy to fill in what is needed, then buy what is on sale that we enjoy & will use. Use coupons, go to 3 stores depending on the ad. Retired & the stores are within about a 10 block square from home.
I sew at the little church. They provide the fabric for most charity work. I buy the batting on sale. I contribute some batting & use some of theirs. I stitch together pieces to make a useable larger piece for baby quilts and small projects. People give me their fabric and the little church sends a bit home with me. I buy what I want for a project on sale 99% of the time. I could buy no more fabric and sew everyday the rest of the year. Good idea I could finish projects. We do lots of confirmation quilts so I enjoy sewing without spending a bundle. I do have my stash, but if I bought it, it was for a planned project or extreme sale/remnant.
I am frugal. I loom knit and buy yarn on sale & folks give me yarn they can't use.

kiffie2413 08-14-2011 02:27 PM

We keep our kitchen stocked, and we mostly eat our leftovers, or bag and freeze them to eat later (like lasagne or enchiladas)...I also have a huge fabric stash, and my scraps are organized (only recently, tho..) by color in clear containers...That being said, I do throw away small scraps, anything smaller than like 1 1/2 inches...My lqs owner keeps all scraps, selvages, and points trimmed off of hst...I just don't have it in me to keep that small stuff...so, I guess I am somewhat frugal, and somewhat not...depends on opinion, eh?...

jeannie t 08-14-2011 02:47 PM

I shop for the month and love having stash. Only buy what I need to complete a new quilt. But I really need to do a few scrappy quilts to use up some of my stash,

QUILTNMO 08-14-2011 03:42 PM

my cupboards are full my freezer is full i eat leftovers dh and i both like them and food is too expensive to waste i have a great stash and i use my scraps and some i give away I feel very blessed to have what i have.

jasming 08-14-2011 04:42 PM

I don't keep scraps ( I send them to my sister who loves them) or a stash. I buy groceries once a week with a list, based on what's in season and on special. My freezer, fridge and cupboards keeps enough food for the week. I don't eat left overs. They go to the dogs, rabbits and chickens.

I am definitely a minimalist in all areas of life. Absolutely no waste but absolutely no clutter.

alapetitechaise 08-14-2011 05:14 PM

1. I have some stash only because I can't stand to thow away leftover fabric.
2. Quilts are planned and fabric is selected and purchased with a little extra for mistakes.
2. Almost all fabric is purchased on sale or with coupons.
3. Small quilts are made entirely from stash if possible.
4. Meals are planned every two weeks with left overs planned for day two.
5. Coupon shoping is a must. Most times meals are planned with a eye on what's on sale at the grocery store.
6. DH is retired and does most of the grocery shopping and cooking. He is as careful with $$ as I am. He is a great cook and we rarely eat out anymore.
7. I cook on weekends to give him a break. I used to can but quit when I was in school and working full time, but I plan to start again.
Hope this helps :)

That is an interesting question.

I have a stocked pantry, but not as full as my Mom's was. She could eat for 6 months from her pantry. I also have a freezer of meat, we raise our own beef and chickens. Can't beat that. As far as my stash, I used to just buy for a project, but living 40 minute drive from LQS, I have learned to build up my stash from thrift and yard sales. I will still buy, but only for a specific project, and not just because it is on sale. I am not good at scrappy and should just clean that out for others to use.
So, I guess that I accumulate food[on sale] like fabric[on sale] so, I think they do relate.

IBQUILTIN 08-14-2011 06:54 PM

I am a chef by trade, and a quilter by heart. My pantry is usually well stocked, but I can get creative when I want something quick and easy. If I find a fabric I like, I buy at least 3 yards of it. I save scraps, but I am by no means frugal, in the quilting studio or the kitchen

Quiltaddict 08-14-2011 07:52 PM

My pantry is so full that nothing else will fit. My freezer is also pretty full, though I have been trying to use up the stuff in there. Also, I have a huge stash and still keep buying more. Never plan my meals just use whatever is there and I love leftovers (it means I don't have to cook).

cr12cats 08-14-2011 09:07 PM

depends if it is winter or summer for food. i stock extra in case it snows during the winter. but in the summer everything is fresh so shop for a week at a time.i try and make extra to freeze up so i have something i can just pop in the microwave but that hasn't worked for me yet cause my husband is such a big eater. the more i make the more he eats so now i am learning to make just what we need and if he wants something else he can make a sandwich or snack.
as for fabric i usually shop for what i need as i need it but save all my scraps cause i use them to make thing with like bowls if i need a quick gift idea or whatever or the small peices come in handy for pp. i like scrappy so it works for me. I don't make the traditional quilts that have to be well planned with a certain color schemes. and i get tired of making the same block over and over again. i love other peoples work that do and admire them to be able to. I make mostly wall hanging and quillows. small things now

donnalynett 08-14-2011 09:56 PM

My husband and I are retired and I guess we could be classed as "survivorists". We keep at least one year of food supplies on hand. We hunt, we fish. We do not throw out left overs. We vacuum seal everything. I fix casseroles in a 13x9" pan, divide it by four and eat one fourth that night and vacuum seal each of the other 3 fourths. Three freezers, two refrigerators, etc....My husband did put his foot down on my idea of burying 50 gallon drums of gasoline in the back yard. We are well stocked with oil lamps and lamp oil and all other necessities. We both believe things are going to get much worse in this world and we are prepared. I have a room of fabric, 13x10, full to the ceiling of fabric and still adding more as I worry about not having the funds to buy fabric and the quilts I make are all for donation to those who really need them. Our friends say we are "hoarders"....I say we are prepared.

Becky Crafts 08-15-2011 12:48 AM

I can't afford much fabric, but buy little bits here & there as I can. I save my scraps as I do my food leftovers and all are used regularly. I try not to waste any more than I have to of either.

BETTY62 08-15-2011 01:19 AM

I save my scraps, have a medium size stash of fabric , save and eat select leftovers, usually have enough food in the pantry or feeezer to fix several meals but love to purchase what I cook on a day to day basis.

Rainy Day 08-15-2011 01:26 AM

I will eat leftovers at work (when I get time to have a break), and take them in for some of the singles at work to have.
I'm working on a stash, buthave learnt to try and buy for a project.
When we cleared out my MILs place after her death in 2008, I found meals I had cooked for her when I was studying in 1996 in her freezer. I clear my freezer out every three months.

grannypat7925 08-15-2011 04:46 AM

I keep my scraps for future use, use my leftovers, try to be creative with the cooking, always buy ahead and when it is on sale, including fabric. Saves in the long run!

Candy Apple Quilts 08-15-2011 04:48 AM

Leftover food? Yes. Stocked pantry? Yes. Little boxes of tiny scraps? Not in a million years!

TexasGurl 08-15-2011 07:39 AM

I'm somewhere in the middle ...don't keep a lot of scraps anymore, but I love scrap quilts. I give leftover scraps to GS troops, bee or Senior center. I will buy fabric with no immediate project in mind. If I like it, I buy it ! May not see it again !
I keep a full pantry & staples but we don't like to buy meat to freeze it. DH doesn't like frozen food, he had enough when the kids schedules had us all running. Now they're off in college/out, we eat more cooked meals. I still look for quick recipes and we eat leftovers. Less cooking time is more quilting time ! :)

VaNella 08-15-2011 08:09 AM

I have "planned overs" both for food and quilts.

sylviasmom 08-15-2011 10:10 AM

My shopping for grocery and for quilting projects are similiar. For groceries, I make a list, according to what we like to eat, planning each meal. For quilting, I copy the picture of the quilt and fabric list. I may or not buy all the fabrics needed at one time, but I put everything together, pattern and fabrics folded together. When I have accumulated all the fabrics needed, I make the quilt. My cooking and quiltmaking are the same, I generally have several things cooking/sewing at the same time.

Nanjun 08-15-2011 11:00 AM

I dont like leftovers... We were 7kids and we ate eveything
no left overs at our house.

SUZAG 08-21-2011 03:14 AM

I used to think I had a large stash but after joining in with you professionals, mine looks puny (4 lg. tubs). Most of mine are from the thrift stores. I have slowed down a lot since I had the realization that my daughter has no interest in sewing and I have no one to leave it to. My stash will probably hit the dumpster since no one understands it. Hopefully it will at least get donated to a good cause (I'd better designate in my will). I've got enough now to last for the rest of my life although if I am making something like a baby quilt, I do need to go out and find novelty fabrics.

I stock up with sales and try to keep a loaded (everything falls out) pantry. Wish I had more freezer space. I start to panic if the stash gets low but if I run short on money, we can always eat. We usually "fight" over the leftovers to see who can grab them first.

I grow a very small garden, just enough for summertime eating. I used to can but do not have the storage space anymore. I do freeze a few veggies if we can't eat the entire harvest.

dotski 08-27-2011 07:29 AM

only buy fabric when i have a pattern in mind and even then i try to find patterns for the fabric i already have. i love scrappy's so no problem there. as fr food i hate to cook and i hate to shop so the least i have to do for bot is fine with me. i do have food in pantry and freezer but not too much. i actually hate when the fridge is full...less is more !!!!
