How about using sawdust?

When I was taught sewing at school we used wool to stuff the pin cushions with as the natural lanolin in the wool prevented the needles and pins from rusting, it works too!

I use BB pellets. Don't want to carry it around with you very often, but it really stays where you want it.

I use wool for the pin cushion and sand for the strawberry.

I'm going to check out hobby lobby. I want to make a pin cushion/ thread catcher combo.

Sawdust works great. My dad has a wood shop and saves me a bag when I'm in pincushion mode!

Has any one ever thought of using kitty litter?
