stumped on what pattern to use for flannel queen bed quilt w plaids

I have about 8 different flannels in grays and blacks (plaids, stripe, solid, pin dot, herringbone) and 2 flannels with red and black hounds tooth and red and black plaid. I need to make a queen size quilt. It is for my dgg and her dh and they prefer simple designs or geometric. These are the colors they like. I have only used flannels for rag quilts or for backs of quilts but have never pieced a quilt top with flannel. any suggestions with be greatly appreciated. I Have 1 and 1/2 yards of each fabric. Thank you!

How about the Double Slice quilt pattern from Missouri Star Quilt Company? It uses a layer cake but you could easily cut your fabrics into 10" squares. At the end of the video, she shows a black and white and red quilt made using this method. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxC-0T5lXw4

Wash the flannel first, then starch. It will help with the cutting.

Definitely pre wash the flannel. How about either a disappearing 9 patch or a 4 patch?

Or even faster and simpler, cut big squares and leave them big squares!

How about a turning twenty, I think it would be beautiful and easy!!

I use tons of flannel! LOL Usually because I am making quilts and/or pillowcases for children and it is so soft and comforting. I always prewash. And I have used many many designs, I guess I ignore the fact that it is flannel and just make whatever I like. So pick a pattern you like and go for it! Have fun!

A few years ago I saw a beautiful, simple flannel quilt at a quilt show. The quilter had taken a simple bear paw block and enlarged it, them put a simple border around it. It looked very cozy and inviting.

Jenny Doan from Missouri Star Quilt Company did a quilt using a layer cake and made stars. I love it! I am going to make it because it is so easy and so so pretty! You can cut 10" blocks and do the same. I loved her quilt. And it made a very big quilt. I can't remember the size of each block, but it was something like 25". Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tkm3nCferp4&feature=fvsr It's something like 70"x100".

I just saw log cabin so predictable. I use flannel on the back of children's quilts. I always pre-wash but I haven never starched. I think start would help and I would limit my pressing of seams to avoid stretch.

Sometimes the simplest is the best. These two were fast and simple but rather attractive.

Your flannels sound lovely! Don't forget to set your stitch length a little shorter if the fabric is a loose weave. It's not necessary if it's a tight weave. Starching before you cut also helps a lot. And I agree to prewash, at least once or twice!

I also like the Square Dance pattern that Alex Anderson uses. Using the same fabric in the center of all the blocks would tie it all together nicely. Unfortunately I can't find a pic of that one for you. But whatever you decide on, good luck and don't forget to post a picture of your finished quilt.

I just made two Carpenter Star lap quilts. The pattern also had queen size. Would be great in flannels.

Years ago I saw a quilt made with checks and striped flannel in a layered brick pattern....that pattern always comes to mind when I see plaid fabric (homespun)...it wouldn't be hard to do.

Yellow Brick Road is always a good choice for a flannel quilt. I made one years ago of plaids in autumn colors, then appliqued leaves on the quilt. One of my favorites...in fact I was cuddling with it last night! I keep wanting to try other similar quilts...like appliqueing snowflakes, stars, flowers, etc, using the YBR as a "background" for the applique.

Here's the Bear Paw I was talking about. This one was a throw, so you'd want to either enlarge it or maybe add 3 more of the center blocks to grow the quilt.

Love your quilt. Very inspiring. I especially like the flannel squares on the inside border. Very attractive. Thank you so much for the picture - really helps to have a visual!
