stupid binding question
If I sew binding on using 1/2" seam allowance (which I must do because the person put prairie points on (badly)), do I stop 1/2" from each corner, or still 1/4"? My mind thinks this is a math question and refuses to function!

good question! I would think you stop half inch and do the miter what ever the seam allowance is that would be the distance you stop from the edge I could be wrong I'm not good in math either

Michell, You would have to stop at 1/2 in to form the miter on the corner and have the 1/2 in binding be on the next side. Does this make sense to you. I think I am telling your right. :)

Thank you ladies! I've been working on this quilt all day and I feel like my brain is about to explode!!!

Yes, I believe you always stop the distance of your seam allowance.

I stitch using 1/4" but I watched that Patrick Lose mention he stitches 3/8" seam. So whatever your seam width is, that is the measurement of when to stop and turn the corner. I found it very interesting to see that he stops and then stitches diagonally off at the corner, then cuts the thread. does his fold and starts stitching again. After quilting for over 25 years, I said HUH?? But I was stitching 1.75" binding on my mug rugs and was so surprised to see nice even miter corners. Must be on YouTube somewhere. I taped the show.

Kimberly Jolly from the Fat Quarter Shop has a great tutorial on binding a quilt. It is the one using the Binding Tool- but that isn't used until the very end. She binds from start to finish and uses mitered corners. It is well produced - easy to see what she is doing with good explanations. You can find it on YouTube
