Stupid mistake

If it isn’t one thing, it’s another. I was going to do some appliqué on a quilt for someone special. I used a supposedly washable felt pen to freehand the ‘branch’ for the flowers in a similar color. The pen marks are behind the stitching and very visible (bright lime green).
.
I tried spritzing water on it to remove the marks...nothing happened. Then spray-on stain remover. The marks on the bottom have faded some, but not these. I can’t wash it because it’s not bound or quilted.

The only thing I can think of is to pick out the stitches and do the stitch over in a darker and slightly larger stitch, unless someone has a better suggestion. I tried to upload a pic but it just wouldn’t go.

I wouldn't take out the stitches but add more to them with a light green to camouflage the marked lines. I would do one and see before taking out all of them.

Oh dear! Try adding more stitching in a darker colour. Try couching some wool or trim over the line?

Tippysmom 04-13-2019 12:45 PM

Stitching over sounds better to me. I’ll just make the ‘branch’ darker and a bit thicker.

Alcohol and Grandma’s Secret Spot Remover didn’t work, either.

Club Soda worked one time for me with a permanent pen.

Jingle 04-13-2019 02:39 PM

A couple good suggestions above.

Can't offer any better suggestions, but maybe your pic was too large to post. If you size it down to around 400x600 it should work.

Can you contact the manufacturer for some suggestions from them?

This is what I would do. The lighter green woven through the darker green will give a nice stem color look.

I took a class from Sandra Leichner and she sometimes uses two or more rows of stem stitch next to each other. Sometimes she uses a single thread wrap stitch to combine the two stems.

I would like to know the name/maker of the marker - so I never buy on.

Try double stitching over the lines

was this a quilt marking pen? i wonder if oxyclean would take it out. could you wet it and rub with oxyclean?

L'il Chickadee 04-17-2019 02:56 PM

Jamie Wallen of Quilter's Apothecary says he used a product called Sew Clean on a quilt where he'd accidently used a Sharpie marker and it did come out. But he doesn't say whether it was days later or immediately after the mistake.

I had a similar issue when using Crayola Washable Markers. I water spritzed and nothing happened. Then I read the directions and it said to use soap and water to remove. Could that be the problem?

It's certainly Not a stupid mistake. It's more one of trusting too much. One thing I learned from this I guess is to do a fabric test first. There are a lot of good suggestions already made. Good luck and hope you don't have to pick out stitches.

Hair spray will get out ink, so maybe try that.

Hmm, this sounds like a great idea. I think I will try it and see if it looks okay. Thank you all for the wonderful tips!

Rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl) often works well to remove inks. Wet with the alcohol then blot to remove the ink. The alcohol with evaporate.
