Stupid Question: Does Needle Size Affect Tension? Or Piecing Paper?

Yes, probably a stupid question:

I nearly always use a size 70 microtex on my class machine and the tension has always been fine. I switched to a size 90 microtex for a class in paper piecing and the tension needed an adjustment of the dial to improve it.

Does needle size impact tension? Or does the friction of the paper change the tension? I was using the Carol Doak paper.

Thanks.
Cathy

It is entirely possible. I believe (not 100% positive) that one of the designations in machine needle sizes is the size of the eye. That is why different thread weights require/recommend different size needles. So if you changed needle size without changing thread I can see where it could effect your top tension and you would need to make a minor adjustment. Here is a handy guide from Superior threads for needle sizes and thread types that may help in the future,

feline fanatic,

Thanks for your reply. I'll check that out.

Apologies for not thanking you sooner. I came across a kitten at the shelter on Saturday and spent the rest of the weekend obsessing about whether or not to adopt her. I so hope she's there tomorrow when they reopen because I think I may bring her home to join our other two cats.

Thanks again,
Cathy
