Do you find your style of quilting changing such as fabric likes and dislikes? I started out loving the flowers on all my fabrics now I am really getting into batiks and arty quilting. But I find myself with all this flower fabric so I need to hurry and get it made into projects so I can move on to what I really want to do.

For me, quilt patterns can be changed by the type/designs of fabrics... I find myself all over the place.. I don't feel the need to stick with a particular style, I just go where the mood strikes me at the time :D:D:D

I have a lot of plaid fabric and I don't like plaids now but it use to be the fabric to buy. Every quilt pattern seemed to have plaid fabric. I'm making rag quilts from the plaids and adding in other fabric that I fell out of love with. The quilts will be used so that's better then having the fabric sitting in a box.

I'm still basically the same color scheme....I used to be light blue, pink, yellow,lt. green. Now I'm burgandy, navy dark yellow and dark green. When I first started quilting, everything had to be tiny little prints. Now I love batik's and what you can do with large scale prints. But I still use them all, I just don't use any old fabric that doesn't feel soft. I guess those were pretty cheap fabrics a long time ago. I love the feel of today's soft fabric.

I love a variety of fabrics but love the "granny or Aunt Gracie" prints the most as I love a lot of "retro" looks. BUT, I'm doing a coin quilt and loving the Aqua and Red (like Bliss) colors and find myself being drawn to them. I also love the "Brights". Oh never mind. I LOVE all fabric. LOL

I tend to buy pastels with small print. Its the little girl in me that wants everything to be bright and pretty.

My stash consisted of lots of dark green, navy, wine, creme, brown, mauve and blue small prints as I used to make runners and wall hangings that I sold and those colors were basics. Didn't do much quilting for the last 12 year and am now back into it and am in love with all the batiks, bright bold colors and large florals so guess what I have been buying?? I've even been buying solids which I didn't have much of. Change is fun but I still love my old stash too.

Fabric wise I've always loved loved batiks (have lots). But my pattern choices change all the time. I'll look over stuff I had purchased about a year before and wonder "what the hell was I thinking". That said, I think change is good!!
Who knows, maybe you'll like it again - have fun

I use any fabric, but I mostly do scrappy or Crazy Patch types. I have done ones with certain type fabric, but that is because they were ordered & the person want just certain colors & prints. It was nice for a change here & there. :-)

I never met a fabric I didn't learn to like!

That's the joy of quilting. There is just so much to do. The possibilities are endless. Who can just stick to one style or type of quilt? If you can, that's great, the rest of us have to keep trying and buying different things. Who knows where the journey will take us...........

catrancher 12-14-2010 09:26 AM

Oh absolutely. When I started, my quilts were pretty traditional. Now I'm finding I like art quilts and more modern looking quilts better. I think it's exposure to new kinds of quilts more than tastes changing. The more I see, the more my taste evolves and matures.

ruthieg 12-14-2010 04:48 PM

I use floral, Americana, and some plaids. I really am getting into batiks for their versatility .

PamQuilts 12-14-2010 08:32 PM

My fabric likes have definately changed over the years. I use to love the small-print calicos back in the 80's. Now, I love the batiks, larger-scaled florals, brights, etc. I'm using up the older fabrics I don't like anymore in scrappy quilts.

IBQUILTIN 12-14-2010 08:34 PM

I started out quilting with the "Blue" Theory, you know, blue is my favorite color. I have noticed in the last year or so, that I am using WAY mo9re yellows and golds than blues. I think our preference changes with our skills and even our mood. I like being a "Yellow" person now, it feels like summer

QuiltswithConvicts 12-14-2010 08:44 PM

You bet! When I started quilting, everything was country blue & pink calicos and solids. Then the geometrics came around along with a limited amount of tone-on-tones. I love the batiks & tonals-such as Moda marbles & fusions. Can't really get into the big, bright fabrics like Kaffe and Amy Butler, but the younger set loves them and that's great!!! Keeps quilting alive!

Style of blocks has changed drastically. When I first began, hand piecing, applique & quilting were the only acceptable methods to make quilts. Very traditional patterns & layouts. Using the machine was only allowed for the first step of sewing the binding on. Now we have machine everything & it's wonderful.

I have gone from pink & blue calico traditional to paper pieced Mariner's Compasses and New York Beauty blocks, along with Celtic applique and an occasional fusible applique using batiks and tonals.

What do you suppose is next?

I love using all colors in my quilts. My main problem is that I am forever attracted to and can't resist buying pinks and I don't know anyone besides me and DGD who would want a pink quilt. LOL.. and we both already have one. I would do a lot more pink in my house but for some reason DH is not in favor. Lol. I get it in where I can.

I do charity quilts and it is often hard to find backing that is masculine so I often using plaids for the backing.

Me, too! I thought I was the only one! I have found my tastes changed so much that I didn't want to use my old fabrics. I decided to use up all my old fabrics, and not to buy too much more until I'd used up the majority. Two years later, I've taken my stash from a large walk-in closet w/22" deep shelving, jam packed, down to 2 tall rolling wire basket carts and one large shelf of backings. It's wonderful! Now I enjoy buying when I see something that will blend in with a future plan...but I don't think I'll ever stock up that much again. I've learned an expensive lesson :)

I find I like buying a new piece of fabric or two to use in a quilt very much. My tastes change, my DD's change, even my GK's have changed. And I do like to shop! I think this is what I was missing before, and I got to the point where I couldn't justify purchasing any more new fabrics when I had so much I needed to use. I wasn't sure I could do a 'no buy', but it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Now, I have the flexibility to keep some basic/loved pieces stocked, and I supplement those with the newer fabrics as I plan for a new quilt. I truly enjoy collecting for a project.

I still have to deal with the UFO's that are of older tastes, and many of which were inherited. I may end up making some tough choices here too.

So far, my new plan is working great...but we'll see long term :)

Who said you can only have 1 quilt? I have a big place with lots of naked walls - at least they were naked when we bought this place. I have been working on covering them up! I don't paint, I quilt!

I bought a very, very large bin with wheels on one end to store my quilts in. Recently, I bought a 2nd one! I divided my quilts between the 2 with all the Mariner's Compass quilts in one. I also have several quilts for the beds. I like the flexability of being able to change out the quilt when the mood strikes!

Go ahead and make all the quilts you want - even if they're all pink ones.

Margie 12-15-2010 04:40 AM

I like some of almost everything.

RugosaB 12-15-2010 03:14 PM

I've thought about it, and I think I like all of them, depends on my mood at the time.

I think that way of viewing quilting makes up for my 'put the furniture in one place and leave it there' way of thinking. We even designed our house's addition with furniture palcement in mind. There's even an electrical outlet in the floor, meaning the furniture has to be a certain way.

But the quilts and quilted items style is whatever whim I have at the moment

I love your attitude! I try to keep on sewing so that I really do not have a "stash" to worry about getting out of date. Hubby says what are we going to do with another quilt, I say USE IT.
