There are some very stiff interfacings that are fusible. Some people also use something in the bottom of the bag like template plastic, plastic canvas or cardboard.

Nancy's notions has what they call Peltex interfacing.

There was a tote tutorial on here today that showed how to use batting and lining. It looked very sturdy.

I found with my purse the handles wore out soonest so that is where I would concentrate o the next one I make. I use fusabale pellpon on my purses. It is like a thin batting.

Peltex is good for bottoms, also soft ans stable gives good body

I use Fusible Pellon Fleece ( from Joann's) For all my purses, bags and totes. Use a dry iron, no steam!
