Suggest block size for log cabin throw?
I want to make a log cabin quilt for my sister (who recently bought a log cabin). I want a good sized throw for the sofa. I'm looking for suggestions for a good block size.

It depends on what pattern you want to do. The furrows or barn raising pattern works for any size block. Some of the other patterns require a certain number of blocks to get the design.

Tartan is right. I usually make 9" blocks, using 1" finished logs for bed-size log cabins. Depending on the pattern, this size would also work for a large throw quilt.

Hmm. I haven't settled on a pattern because there are so many cool ones! I like barn raising, dirty windows, and a couple others whose names escape me.

Funny...I was just thinking about this topic. What a coinkydink!
I've made a few log cabins recently and I've been tying, instead of quilting them. I've found that after a few washes, the larger blocks are having some issues with unattractive wrinkling (vs. cute puckering,) and are not holding together quite as well as a quilted piece would. However, the smaller block quilts, which are tied closer together, are doing fine. So, I would suggest a smaller block, if you plan on tying your quilt. ~ Cindy |
Thanks for the tip, but I plan to quilt it on my new birthday present that has an 11" throat. :)

I go look at Google when trying to decide on a specific pattern:

I found one I'm going to use. I love that it's somewhat unique in that it's not just log cabin blocks, but also includes my favorite block--pinwheels. And this pattern just so happens to be the exact size I was looking for, and it's free. :). It's designed by Candy Hargrave using Jo Morton fabric, but I'll use my own to suit the theme I'm going for.

When making a large throw like for a couch, I make 12in blocks.
