Suggestions For Blocks?
I'm looking for suggestions for blocks in a sampler quilt. Our former neighbor has just been diagnosed with a brain tumor and after surgery, she will need several radiation treatments to reduce the part of the mass that they cannot remove. I sent a message to one of her daughters to find our her favorite colors and Bible verse for a comfort quilt, but her daughter had no suggestions, so I thought I might do a lap sized sampler quilt in warm colors (perhaps cream and cranberry?) and pick blocks that might have meaning to her.
So, here's the info I have. She's a homeschooling mother of 11 and a very sweet, woman. She's a Christian and grew up on a farm (wasn't there a block titled, "Farmer's Daughter"?) and is now living on a farm (or a block titled, "Farmer's Wife"?). I was thinking of doing a block for each of her children and then one for her and then I was thinking of doing a quilt with just her interests. Any suggestions for blocks that would go well with this quilt? |
How about Jacobs Ladder, Rose of Sharon and some of the other Biblical name blocks

Here are some Bible quilt blocks.

I love using these panels in quilts. They also have some nice free patters to use with the panels.

Figure out what size or sizes you want and to www.qilterscache.com You can just read down the list in the size category that fits and see if any names call out to you.
I saw one in the 8 inch category called "next door neighbor". That might fit your plan. |
How about a "New York Beauty" block, since she lives in NY; a "schoolhouse" block since she home schools; New York's state flower is a rose, there are many of those to choose from; There is a block here called "comfort" http://civilwarquilts.blogspot.com/2...ort-quilt.html
and one here called "star of hope" http://www.edwardssoftware.com/quilts/blocks.html |
There is a whole "farmer's wife" sampler quilt; it's intense. You can google it, perhaps there are some appropriate blocks within that quilt.

I second going to Quilter's Cache and looking for blocks with appropriate names. I had a good quilting friend who moved to Wyoming, and I found a Wyoming block, a Road to California block, a Friendship block, and a Memories block. Made a nice wallhanging...

I'm so torn, now! I love the Biblical blocks, and the quilter's cache website. I did find quite a few blocks, though, so I was thinking I might combine some Biblical blocks with the blocks from quilter's cache. I just have to quickly figure out which ones to use and then get it going. My goal is to get it done as soon as possible so she could have it for her radiation treatments.

Just wanted to say it's wonderful people like you who help others through difficult times! Good luck with the quilt.

How about Quilt in a Day's Egg Money Quilts? If you don't have this book, you can purchase it at Quilt in a Day's Website. You can also check out Quilt in a Day's Media Theater to see if Egg Money Quilts would be something you would like, before you purchase it. Also, you may be able to find a copy at your local library. If your local library does not have a copy, they may be able to find one at a different library. Egg Money Quilts is a book about the 1930's and have many different patterns to make a sampler.

hi ps150
i think the sampler idea - while very nice - is also very time consuming. in the past few years when making 2 quilts under similar circumstances, i chose a 9patch alternating with a churn dash. when doing the layout, start with the 9 patch on top (and make the 9p so the outer blocks are the lighter fabric), you will get a nice circular effect. to personalize the quilts, i had the kids, grandkids and great grands send an outline of their handprints. i ironed each hand print to 2 thicknesses of freezer paper and voila - instant template, then i just added initials. i can't remember what else i did for each quilt, but the handprints certainly filled up a lot of space. on the outer border for one quilt i used the christian fish icon, as the recipient was a very spiritual woman. i wasn't sure if this would be seen as insulting - or a nice touch - but i checked with someone and she gave me the go ahead. sending good thoughts to you and your friend lefty - in philly |
Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I finally finished BOTH quilts!! Here's the link to the pictures: http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...ml#post6126309

You're a sweetie to do this.
Unless she is a quilter she won't have have a clue as to the names of the quilt blocks you do. So, IMO, choose ones you like and don't worry about the names of the blocks being "biblical". Something with the names of her kids on it would be great. I'm considering doing something for my parents with all the names of the children and grandchildren embroidered (but it's not a comfort quilt, but rather a 'grandparents' quilt.) |
