If you didn't catch my other post, this is the quilt I'm going to be making for a friend of the family who has cancer. I'm having a bit of trouble picking out fabrics. I just went through a Hancock's Paducah catalog and didn't find a lot of fabrics that I found suitable. I did like the Floral Fusions by Robert Kaufman, but they're basically of the same fabric in different colors and I wonder if using them for the whole quilt might make it a bit bland or stale. Think I need a little help on here. Any fabric suggestions? |
It's a very pretty pattern.
|
what kind of home decorations and clothes does the friend like? the florals with a few solids would make a nice blended quilt and for some people that's the perfect look (those who wear neutrals more than bold colors). However, if the friend is bold and not afraid to stand out in a crowd, more solids or bold prints might be best.

Not really sure what the man is wearing these days, but it sure ain't floral prints. lol.

there you go, got half the problems resolved....

why not the colors that its pictured here in? I think its beautiful
|
do you like the scrappy look? mix and match the same shade of greens, and yellows and whatever else color that it is. if you truly do it scrappy and not just change the fabric choice per block, it will be comfy, cozy and beautiful.

I love batiks, so I would be doing earth tones for a guy, brown, rust/orange, maybe some greens.
|
I think I wouldn't limit myself to one line or designer. First decide the two background colours. I love tan and navy for a man. Then decide the star colours based on that. Burgundies and dark greens are good. It doesn't matter to use a floral, but I use small floral prints when it's for a guy, and mix them with geometrics so they're not ALL floral
Make any sense? |
Try Equilter.com or connectingthreads.com for more options.
For a guy I'd do earth tones... |
I don't think you'd go wrong using the same fabric in different colors. In the case of this pattern, which is fabulous by the way, I think it is striking because there isn't the kind of variation you'd see with all different colors/patterns.
I'm doing a quilt for a class called Lucky Stars that I decided to do in all the same fabric but with different colors. I haven't started it yet but I think it will work very well. I chose Moda Marble Swirls in the twelve color wheel colors. JMHO http://www.atkinsondesigns.com/patte...?productID=129 |
Does he have a favorite color(s),? favorite sports team?. You can use those colors as the main colors in your backgrounds and then used a variety of other coordinating fabrics for the other designs.
|
Okay, I should've clairfied that the colors in the picture are going to be the colors of the quilt. The problem is finding fabrics in those colors that aren't completely solid (which is what I typically go for) or aren't really girly or floral since it is going to a guy.

Hey,
The quilt is perfect as a comforting gift. Moda has a design called "Origins" which has the combination of colors you show in your diagram. It would be perfect if you use the designs in that line alone or combine with others. Either way, you simply must look at Origins. Bless you for sharing your talents with others.
