Suggestions for good ironing board
 

Good morning fellow quilters,
Can any of you recommend a very substantial ironing board?
I quilt a lot, and my current ironing board needs replacing.

I have a Rowenta ironing board, think I got it at Sam's Club years ago. It is wider than a standard one which is nice but it is very sturdy. Lately you see a lot of ladies that are making their own by using many unique things. You probably would get a lot of ideas on line, even if you search it on this board.

right now I have an old antique ironing board I got at a yard sale for $5. But when we get our new house, my sewing room will have a new board. I'm going to use one of our old kitchen cabinets as a base, and have dh cut me a piece of thick plywood to fit on top. I'll put batting and a cover on the plywood. It will be around 5' long and 2' wide.

I've never had a store bought ironing board that was sturdy enough for me.

You may have heard of the Big Board...I've seen it in some quilt catalogs for $100.00 or more. DH and I made one together out of plywood, approximately 22 by 60 inches. I covered it with a couple layers of cotton batting and a cotton fabric which I have replaced a few times since then. It is on top of a long dresser which I purchased from a thrift store. A buffet would work just fine. If you want to keep it on top of an ironing board, make sure it is sturdy enough to hold it.

WalMart has a nice board that is wider than normal (not as wide as the Big Board). They also have the replacement covers for it. I've had mine for a couple years and really like it. I did put a wool blanket under the cover for extra padding. It wasn't terribly expensive

My husband made me a topper for my dresser. OSB board covered in one layer of 100% cotton batting,and topped with 100% cotton canvas. I also made a removable canvas cover that attaches over the board with Velcro to the underside so it can remain snug. The canvas really helps keep your quilt blocks from distorting while pressing. Mine is 26" x 60"...much easier to press yardage.

Got my big board from Wal-Mart and I really like it.

Love the idea of using a small dresser as an ironing board, becuase it will be nice and deep and you have the drawers there to store things within your reach.
