I bought my granddaughter a Jem Gold when she was 9 or 10; still using it at 16.
I have one myself that I take to sew-ins and classes. It's a great little machine.

That's what I was thinking. I think they will have a brother for $50 and a singer for $99. They are both rather basic machines, but very good for a beginner to use.
