Well, that pretty much proves there is something for everyone, because I love them! :)
You feel about those fabrics the way I feel about batiks (yes, I know, I'm going to get slammed). I just don't like them and even when I was given some, I can't figure out how I would use them! |

Here's some pix. I also have a 1" stack of 8x8 fabric squares that are (almost) just as ugly. Keep the suggestions coming, please!

She posted the fabric was poor quality. Why would anyone want poor quality fabric just because it's pretty? Not worth the time to mess with.
Its a shame to throw them all away. They really weren't that bad. They wouldn't be bad in a rag quilt.
I love them too. I think a scrappy irish chain would be beautiful.
To be honest, once I saw them grouped by color, I did warm up to quite a few of them. There were a few that reminded me of morning sickness but, overall, I started to really like them. Then I went to piece a few together for a block and realized the quality was beyond horrid so that’s ultimately why they went into the trash....not because of design but because of quality.

:D Too funny!!! :D |
The old adage.. "if your fabric is ugly (to you) then it just means you haven't cut it up small enough!" I can confirm this logic as I'm currently cutting up ugly-to-me fabrics for an Irish Chain and they are beautiful, again!

They reminded me of the feed sack prints of the 30's and 40's my DM used to make things from.

I’ll spare you the gory details but I am the unfortunate recipient of many, many 4x4” blocks of the ugliest fabric ever. ….little tiny busy-busy-busy-busy flower blocks in all kinds of colors. I can’t stand looking at them but I can’t bring myself to throw them out either. Any suggestions on what I can make and quickly unload on an unsuspecting person?

I make ministry quilts for people who are suffering in some way. The expense is all mine (which I consider a blessing) and I think the fabric is nice. Yes, I would be willing to pay postage if you want it out of your sight!!
hate to tell you, but i like them all. they would make cute kids quilts. Get going.
I liked the mock up block you made. But, totally respected your decision to "toss" the fabric. Why spend time and money on a quilt that is not going to make it. Or that will fade quickly into dust.
That being said, I bought a bunch of that exact fabric once.(It was from China.) I was curious. I actually liked the small prints. I washed one piece because the fabric felt off. It faded badly. I decided to put the test piece in the bag (I marked it.) with all the rest of the fabric squares and donated it to a thrift store. I just didn't want to gift a quilt that would fade badly. I decided to let someone else decide if they wanted to try and use it. |
Doesn't anyone realize she said it was bad quality fabric? Really you would use bad quality because it was free?
Guess we all missed that part, fruitloop, since we were mesmerized by the "morning sickness" colors LOL. :) :p
Eye of the beholder for sure, I loved them and see them in a fantastic scrap quilt, the type that is happy & cheerful, fun to take on picnics.
I gotta say - I don't think they are ugly at all but, if as you say, quality is awful then I guess your decision to trash them was the right one.
Wish l lived closer, Libits, I'd gladly send you a prepaid , preaddressed shipping envelope! But l live in Ontario, Canada. Those squares would be a blessing for others who also make quilts for hospice, hospitals and nursing homes as l do.
Kinda sad you don't like these fabrics, it is hard to make something out of things you do not like, but some little girl would love a little quilt, all her own; from the cute little poises. Maybe you could go ahead and make a little quilt or 2 and give them to the police department in your home town. The police officers sometimes carry quilts (small) if they need to take a child out of a home in a hurry, this way they could wrap a child up with something that will become their own, just for comfort. Or make and take to a hospital to give children going through chemo.
Poor quality fabric is a waste of time to sew with. You could maybe use it for a craft project like decoupage or similar.
There are lots of quilters on fixed incomes that can not afford to buy new fabric. They may see your ugly fabrics as beautiful. Pass your squares on to one of them for the cost of postage. It would
make their day. |

They're in the trash. I hope I don't get fined by my municipality The quality of the fabric is worse than what appeared as I was sorting it. There can't be 5 threads per inch. I wouldn't give this to anyone. Case closed and movin' on!
I hope you can still dig them out of the trash and send them to some of these people who might love them. Then we would all feel better.
I don"t think it is ugly at all. I would cut them down to 2 1/2" squares and mix it in with all my other 2 1/2" scrap squares that I use for scrap quilts. If you do not want to use it, don't throw it! You can send it my way and I would happily accept it and pay for the shipping.

I took a bunch of my orphan blocks and cut them into 2.5 inch strips, then sewed them end to end. Seperated with 2.5 inch sashing strips. Here is the result. This pic is before quilting.
Again, Why do you want bad quality fabric to make a quilt?
I think these fabrics are beautiful!
Oh my goodness, those are lovely. I'd love to have them if you want to sell them.
You can send all of them to me and I'll give them a good home. I do appreciate that not everybody likes this type of fabric. Reminds me of the "good ole days" of the farming community so I love them. There is so much you can do with them the ideas just roll off me. Whatever you decide to do with them it will be a beautiful quilt and it may become one you really like when all is said and done. Good luck and Happy Sewing.

For future reference, small-scale floral prints are perfect for color wash quilts, and a quilter needs So many to create a color wash quilt, the idea being that one uses a print only once or twice. I have been collecting small-scale florals for years and still don't have enough.
OMG, i want them all. i think they are beautiful. But i agree with you, if the fabric is thin, it's not worth all the work using up 4 inch squares. lots of work to make a quilt out, and then it would wear out quickly.

I'm betting if you posted them available for teh cost of postage, they'd get snapped up. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Even if they aren't beautiful, I'd cut them in to 1.5" squares and they'd be fine. Trust me, somebody who can't spend much would love them.

I have a pattern for wheelchair quilts, backed with flannel so they don't tend to slide off the lap. There is a had warmer pocket and a small pocket for change, room keys, etc. Make up a mess of those and donate them to a VA hospital or nursing home. When I make mine I do not cut the 5" squares, I just pair them up with a nice solid fabric. |
Like the others, I think they're pretty, and if nothing else, you could simply sew the the blocks together with a solid you don't want, and make donation quilts.
They're not ugly at all - at least not for someone like myself who loves vintage 30's collections. Alternate them with white squares and you'll soon have baby quilts or lap quilts that someone would delight in receiving.
I like them, too! LOL. I like Libits idea! That would be really pretty.

How about blocks something like this? I have a lot of white fabric I bought when just learning so it’s about the same poor quality as the squares. And the white would de-ugly some of the prints. And I could get rid of 8 squares in one block!

I agree with you. It must of been popular at one time. |
