I did 5" squares alternating a deep blue (almost navy) with fussy cut sports, animals and other fabrics suitable for boys

Fast to make and it was absolutely loved. I had added a picture or two printed on fabric too.

My first thought is a quilt made from denim or t-shirt quilt but you'd have to have their old t-shirts unless you got some at a thrift store. And a denim quilt would be heavy to mail.

How about a D9P in their favorite colors or to match their room?

grannypat7925 08-24-2011 10:06 AM

Find out what their interests are and go from there.

suelin 08-24-2011 10:13 AM

I too am going to make a quilt for a teen boy. Thanks for all the ideas!!

Grama Chris 08-24-2011 10:49 AM

How about a T-shirt quilts I'm sure that you may have plenty of them around, use sashing between them :)

I think you need to find out their interest first.
If sports, go with a sports theme. It hunting
like my 13 yr. old grandson, go with that theme.
Just an idea.

What about a denim rag quilt with flannel plaid on the back. I made my son a Bearpaw quilt when he was a teenager and he loved it.

vickimc 08-24-2011 12:38 PM

sports or sports team fabrics. call mom and see what they like. If they are into Boy Scouts, there is great fabric for that. Or hunting or fishing. Mom can help, I am sure.

resource fabricologist 08-24-2011 12:39 PM

How about a T-shirt quilt? Maybe their mom could slip some T-shirts to you.

Mazda 08-24-2011 12:40 PM

I made my 14 yr old grandson a University of Oklahoma quilt.

sylviasmom 08-24-2011 01:05 PM

And what 15yr old doesn't dream of a car? Someone younger, that's a little bit harder. I like the suggestion of a star quilt. Won't be outgrown, fits any decor.

I have done some for Quilts for Kids with baseball theme, hockey theme, soccer, etc. Can't go wrong with sports. Teen boys love dogs too. Am getting ready to make a quilt for my 15 yo DGS in shades of grey to go in his grey room. I have posted pics of my quilts in the past; maybe you can find them.

teacherbailey 08-24-2011 01:14 PM

My son is now 27 and still uses two quilts I made for him at that age.....one is a football fabric with pennants and footballs in his school colors, no piecing, just two widths of fabric backed in fleece and sewed just enough to connect the two fabrics to each other. The other is a great basketball print with lots of color and movement with batting and a backing, again no piecing....and enough quilting to hold it all together. Some of you may not call these quilts but I do! :)

babeyruth 08-24-2011 01:19 PM

I think log cabins always work well for boys, usually I think teen boys don't care much, just maybe some nice masculine colors.

Maybe start with finding out their favorite color?

I made this for my son.

Oooh! I love it!

Just-Lee 08-24-2011 05:11 PM

I made a Pittsburgh Steelers rag quilt for a teen. He loved it, used it, and there wasn't much time invested :) I also think that square in a square is masculine when used with the right colors.

Quiltaddict 08-24-2011 05:13 PM

I love all the BQ patterns because they feature large areas of your focus fabric. For that age, anything with cars or motorcycles would be perfect.

I agree, also animal prints

Either go with the dream truck, american metal cars or find out what his favorite video game is.

tuesy 08-24-2011 06:35 PM

I have a teenager son and he likes X-box (Halo especially) so I digitized and embroidered blocks for him that showed some of the awards that he had received on the game.
He also likes to make movies so I made him the Strip Show quilt (think that's what it's called) out of bright colors..
He also likes lizards and planes.. also has a duvet cover that covers the BTB quilt he had when he was little.

If you can find out just a few things they like, then you can go from there..

I'm considering doing a Tumbling Blocks for one of my grandsons. My other grandson has aspergers, so I'm going to use the new 3D fish material to make his quilt. For my oldest daughter, I made her a t-shirt quilt using her swim and water polo t-shirts. Used sashing and corner stones. Will try to post picture. Thanks, everyone, for sharing your beautiful quilts.

sailsablazin 08-24-2011 10:31 PM

I have a 15 year old....race cars or sports cars, corvettes, music theme, stars and constellations, horizons, sunsets, oceans.

gramarraine 08-25-2011 05:37 AM

If you knew what football or basketball teams they liked that would make a great quilt. If they are into hunting or fishing there is some really nice outdoors themed fabric in the stores. Or like has already been said demin or rag quilts are always nice. I have done all of the above and the quilts were loved.

This reminds me of one I saw at the Hillboro Senior Center Quilt show for a son or grandson. He loved the Cin. Reds and it was a red and white color quilt with some of the white squares embroidered with various favorite player's names and number, and baseball statistics, his birthdate, and he proposed to his wife at a game so that was commemorated too.

Find out what their hobbies are and see if you can get the fabric for them. I made an Amish pattern Quilts but used vintage cars with surf boards on the squares for my son-- he was in his twenties. That will give to some great ideas.

Marvel 08-28-2011 07:21 AM

I have made a Saints quilt for a 15 yr old as its his favorite team. Check with Mom and see if they are into sports, raceing of bikes, soap box derby, etc, My GS played in a band for years and he loved one with musical instruments.

miholmes 08-28-2011 07:51 AM

I'm acctually going out to get the new Marvel Super Hero Line of fabrics today. Because...well I'm a kid at heart. If they are into that at all, it might be nice for the quilt you are considering....:)

I'm having the same problem. A quilt for my 14 year old grandson...I don't see him often...distance problem...any suggestions from anyone out there?

DOTTYMO 06-27-2013 05:09 AM

Black nd bright colours seem to be very much in there realm. I would get a list of interest no matter how small from him or parents. My teenage nephew designed his own quilt and came with me to buy fabric and selected his own. All I had to do was follow his instructions. These children are encouraged at school to make their own designs etc so he should be very old. His 6 year old brother made his design as well. He wanted squares with dinosaurs in. His drawing was close .

tessagin 06-27-2013 05:11 AM

Find out everything you can about them. How about camo. You could do something in one color camo with the 12 year olds favorite things and then the same in a different color camo with the 15 year olds favorite things. Something that would carry them through their high school and maybe college years.

LTeachergeorge 06-27-2013 05:40 AM

My grandson (16 yrs) is not much into sports. I made him a Sudoku quilt using rectangles instead of squares. He helped me pick out the colors (and with the arrangement). Most of the fabrics came from my stash. Can't get the picture to load -- sorry, It was in blues (almost navy), yellows, and oranges.
