I backed mine with flannel, and did not use any batting. I love it as the flannel keeps it from sliding off the bed. I live in Central Texas

I have often used flannel for this type of quilt. As I have mentioned before, my youngest made throw quilts for her bandmates in high school to take to competitions with them (grandstands can get a bit chilly in fall). She used flannel as batting because it still gave the quilt a bit of softness and warmth without being bulky, They were able to roll them up and stick them in their backpacks.

The summer quilt we use has 100% cotton batting. With the cotton top and back the entire quilt "breathes" and we don't perspire under any synthetics.
