I have bought a sunbonnet sue quilt pieces at an estate sale. along with some other quilt tops that have already been peiced together.The dress, bonnett, sleeve and shoes are all cut out. The bonnett sleeves and shoes are all one color (solid) and the dresses are prints. Is this the correct way this quilt should be cut out? I was wondering if the sleeve could be a contrasting color and maybe the shoes black. Please send me your opinion. Glenda in Texas

There are many ways to do them and this is one of them . Do you like the colors if so I would just use them. Maybe make one and see how you feel about it ?

First, congratulations on your find at the estate sale.

That's the way I learned to do Sunbonnet Sue back in the 70s - hat and sleeves are the same solid, dress is a coordinating print, and the shoes either matched the sleeves and hat or were black. That was also what was published in the limited number of books we had back then. It is probably the more traditional way to do Sue.

It's up to you if you want to do a more traditional quilt or go in a completely different direction or do a combination of traditional and something else. That's the really great thing about quilting, you have creative license to do whatever you want.

No rules, it's all about what YOU like, if you want to change it and make it different to put your own twist on it, I say go ahead! Wish I could find something like that, good job!

the Sue quilt blocks I have that my Grandmother did back in the 70's were dress print, shoes, arm and hat a solid color. That's how I've done the ones I've made too. I've seen them lots of different ways online though.

I just dug out a Sue that my sister made in the early 1930's. The dress is print,(red, white and blue). The hat sleeve and shoes are red.

Do it the way you like it and I can't wait to see your pics!
