Super Delray thread?
 

My cousins wife found many cones of this at a thrift store (4000 yd cones) and asked if I could use it for quilting. I don't know anything about this thread although I assume it was used for commercial sewing due to the yardage. Does anyone know about it?

I've never heard of it but saw some on ebay for sale. Look inside the bottom of the cone and see if it is 100% cotton or a blend. Pull some off the spool and tug on it and see if it breaks easily. Does it say what weight it is: ie: 40, 30 ???

If you are still unsure, make a small sample of two fabrics and batting and quilt with it. I doubt it is thin enough to piece with but quilting to put your sandwich together might be fine.

Oh and you might need to use a larger needle size if it's a heavier thread. Good luck.

I would certainly give it a try. I'm not a thread snob at all so if it doesn't break or shred and gives me good tension then it's a keeper.

Hey J, post a pic of it so we can see it too. Is it heavier of finer. Hold it up next to your regular thread if there is no info in the cone and see if it is very different in size.

When I googled Delray Thread Company,most of what came up was Delray Sheets (600 count) and the above site. Not much help.

This might sound wierd but could Delray be a color name rather than a brand?

Is there any other info on the cone?

I attached a picture and did the following:
Checked the label for weight, didn't see it. I did pull on it and it did not break.
I compared it to my serger thread. It is not as bumpy, uneven or as stretchy as serger thread, but it is close to the same weight.
Its definitely heavier than my Gutermann.

By the label I would say that you have 4800 yds of 50 wt thread. I did a search on Threads USA and it appears that they are manufacturers/distributors? (not sure which) of several thread lines. I would definitely try it as a quilting thread (seems a little heavy for piecing) and if your machine likes it you are in luck.
