which sites do you use to show your support? I hope this isn't a sore subject to bring up here-if it is I am sorry! I have friends and family, so I was wondering where my questionable quilting talents may best be put to good use. Thanks!!

One of my guilds is making quilts for citzensam.org These quilts are sent to Germany and when a wounded soldier returns to the states these gurney sized quilts make the journey with them. The quilts are theirs to keep and some have been said to put their medals on their quilts.

There are very specific color, fabrics, batting and size requirements. Check out the website it see if you think this might be "your thing".

patricej 05-24-2010 07:48 AM

we have a battalion of Warriors in Transition (aka Wounded Warriors) here, at Fort Stewart, in Georgia.

our local guild is trying to collect 500 quilts by November for them. if you knew how small the guild is, you'd know how hard we're working to help them meet the goal.

i think i will have turned red, white & blue by the time november rolls around!

QOV = Quilts of Valor has a web site, they are very active in quilts for wounded soilders.

My church is sending Helmet Liners to Iraq. They are fairly easy to knit but have to be made from 100% wool and the label must accompany the liner (the reason being they have to be made from 100% wool and not a blend as acrylic is flamable). We are using Patons wool and the pattern can be found at: http//www.michaels.com/art/online/ProjectPrint?width=80&pid=25769
It took me about 6 hours to knit the first one and I used double pointed needles (USA 6 and USA7) and a circular 16" needle.
The pattern says it takes 2 hours to complete one, it would be nice to be able to knit that fast.LOL I thought I was a pretty quick knitter but that would be really amazing to see.

There are many organizations talked about on here that would love a quilt or quilts, from you :D:D:D
(((HUGS))) for thinking about joining in :D:D:D

craftybear 05-27-2010 10:39 AM

do you belong to a quilting guild as they are always making quilts for soldiers

ninas3kids 05-27-2010 10:51 AM

no, I am usually on the road (truck driver), and the nearest guild is 40 miles from here. I will continue to check the net though, thanks!

Good luck in your endeavor for helping out our troops!!

When my son was hurt in Iraq his first tour, he was taken to Balad and then flown home. He was given a quilt from someone in Iraq to bring home. Unfortunately it was lost in transit but he did say it meant the world to him to know that he was thought of.
My quilt group is making them for Quilts of Valor.
Some of you already know that my son is back in Iraq for the 2nd time and before that he was in Bosnia/ Afghanstan.
My daughter celebrated her 21st birthday there and now my granson just joined. Hopefully they will never get one of the Q of V.

brushandthimble 05-30-2010 05:56 AM

I made a quilt for my son when he finished basic training, he took it to Korea, Irag, and the hospital when his daughters were born. I haven't seen it for awhile, but guessing it is well worn and loved.

debbieumphress 05-30-2010 06:39 AM

I make "Patriotic quilts" for the "Snowball express that comes thru Dallas every year. And we make pillowcases to send to Iraq for troops. They get pillows and no covers. One batallion sent us a thank you card with their picture and each is holding his pillow. (heart palpatations). There are so many sites now to donate to. My dad was Army retired, My husband is Air Force, I have two sons who each served 8 years in the Army. I am definitely an army brat. Thank you to all the families of those who fight for us. Last summer we were out at the DFW airport with quilts for children and the Moms or dads would stop at out booth and we would film them on dvd saying something to their loved ones, then we would mail the quilt and the dvd to their children and wife. Some would read stories on the dvd for their children's night=night. I will continue to pray and support our troops every where.

May God bless all of you that are making quilts for our soldiers. I can't wait until I feel like my quilting skills are worthy of one of our soldiers. (Don't say they don't care about the quality, you haven't seen my quilting yet LOL!) May God protect our soldiers and their families and may their sacrifices always be remembered and appreciated.

AnnaK 05-30-2010 11:40 AM

I have a list of items that troops in Afghansitan need and I am putting together a care package to send with some of the things. I think so much about those young men and women so far from home and wish they could all come home safely and back to their families.

sahm4605 05-30-2010 12:27 PM

A few years ago I tried to sign up as a pen pal on one of those sites to send thanks and greetings to soldiers, never heard from them. and I always checked my email to see. I would love to find a group out here that I could assist with making quilts or even pillow cases for our troops.

One of my Guilds makes Quilts of Valor - which is a national organization that provides large lap quilts to wounded women and men. Most seem to be done in Red White and Blues. I did a flowery one - thought a woman might enjoy more.

You can probably just Google "quilts of valor" if you're interested.

For those of us already quilting for kids, alzheimers' research, breast cancer support, and other worthwhile recipients, is there a veteran's quilting group that needs a cash donation? I can't quilt for everybody, but I'd like to commemorate my Dad's service in WWII as well as support our troops today. I know every little bit helps!

Hi,
You can just call your local VFW or American Lefion and I am sure they can help you out. Even some local church groups are making soldier quilts and would welcome the donation.
Good Luck and thank you from an Army mom and Navy widow.

the quilts project is not a WTU program. the guild is a civilian community group. check the local newspapers to see if there's a guild in a nearby civilian community. if you don't find anything in the papers, try contacting some local Chambers of Commerce. they might have information.

I was going to suggest LQS too.

Anyone near Silver Lake/Fayetteville NC the LQS I am familiar with is "Lovin Stitches" I know they have a group and take donations. It an awesome quilt shop.

Jenney Horst 06-25-2010 12:03 PM

Patches could always use a cash donation for buying fabric and batting, thread. We give the quilts to VA in West Los Angles, VA hospital Sepulveda CA and to Brook army Medical. Check out the web Patchesfabrics.com philanthropy Operation Mend UCLA. The kids who need community service for graduation can get a 20 hr service certificate which is what the colleges are looking at these days to get accepted. How much service they will give back to their communities when they graduate. If you go the search here and put in for the troops you will see some of the kids who have made their quits. I'm also going to add pictures of some of the recipients.

harvsstuff 06-25-2010 12:26 PM

:) We make Christmas stockings and helmet liners for the troops in Iraq. We recently gave a donation of $2000 to the "original shoe box lady" in Belleview Florida to help with the postage of mailing out boxes. We also make ditty bags. In a couple of weeks we will start cutting/sewing the christmas stockings which we usually make close to 1000. They appreciate anything that you can send. Hopefully we will once again make small kids quilt that will be given out to children in Iraq. Dennise

Jenney Horst 06-25-2010 12:29 PM

patchesfabrics.com go into philantropy and then Operation mend UCLA That the easiest way. Or go to search in here and type in for the troops.

My son was stationed in Ft. Stewart last year. He is now in Arizona. I have a quilt top I would like to donate in reds, whites and blues to your guild. Do I need to add batting and backing also? The top is done, I just need to know if I should complete the whole thing or what. Thanks,
