Supreme Slider? Does it really make a difference?
I'm contemplating purchasing one. Does it really make a big difference? What size did you buy? I was thinking about the queen size...the king size one is just over-the-top expensive for what it is and the regular size one just seems too small.
|
YES. It really works. I have the queen size. It makes a big difference when doing FMQ. I also use the gloves. Together they have helped me improve my quilting a lot.
|
Thanks for asking that. I've been wondering if they were good. I'm planning to look for one at Quilt Festival this year
|
And I will be a voice of dissent since I don't use the slider or gloves. My HQ sweet 16 has a laminate covering that works just fine. I bought a slider and honestly it is just one more product I dont use
|
I had one and ripped it- sewed it to the back of my quilt- I was so mad! Someone told me to get one of those teflon sheets for the oven- 2 of them were about 10.00 on Amazon. Work fantastic! I just cut a hole in the needle area and affix with painter's tape. They work just as well, or in my case, better.
The prices for the Supreme Sliders are ridiculous. |
I have had one for years. I tried using it several times and it kept sliding. I put it away and never use it.

And I thought I was the only one who sewed through her supreme slider! It did not stay put, slipped from where it was placed and ended up sewn into my free motion stitches on the back of my quilt. I just tossed it and considered lesson learned. I do not recommend it, especially at its price.
|
I always tape mine down so it doesn't move. Still I like it.
|
they are so popular i guess they work well for many.
personally, i didn't see any difference when i tried one. a big piece of freezer paper, taped down, shiny side down, works just as well. some people have used a silicone spray on their machine beds with success. apply like spray wax, buffing to remove excess. spray wax works, too, i think. |
Useful to help your quilt slide, but---- I have found that while it sticks well to some machines it doesn't do so well for others, as a result I tape mine at the back and also at the far right side, that way I can lift it up to get to the bobbin area on my PQ without having to completely remove it.
Another problem I have found is that over time the needle opening will become warped which causes it to lift along one side, this will catch on the quilt which is a pain when FMQ. To solve that problem I cut an opening large enough to fit around the needle plate. This also allows me to keep my slider on my machine all the time since the feed dogs will be exposed when raised and the seam lines marked on the needle plate are visible. For me it works just as well as it did with just the small needle hole and I can quickly switch from FMQ to piecing without having to remove, rinse and dry the supreme slider. I also tried the silicone spray, but worried about gettingit in the oiling holes on the bed of my machine. I also found that I had to reapply it frequently. Rob |
I keep mine on my machine all the time. I haven't had any issues with it slipping. I always check to make sure it is not loose before I sew and if it is I rinse it and it clings like new. My extension table is not acrylic, that may make a difference.

I had one, didn't work for me, my quilt moved around better without it!

[QUOTE=SusieQOH;7886443]I had one and ripped it- sewed it to the back of my quilt- I was so mad!
Me too. I taped mine down but when I want to change the bobbin I have to untape it. I may see about the teflon sheets now. You know, maybe if our machines are too slippery for the supreme slider then they are already slippery enough, so no need. |
This happened to me too. Very frustrating.
|
Yes,I have found for me, it does make the quilt top "slide" over the sewing machine bed smoother...so the fabric keeps moving at a consistent pace to keep your stitches even. I think it helps to eliminate drag as you move the quilt. I have the small size slider as my machine throat space is small.
|
I only FMQ lap size or smaller on my DSM but I do use the queen size slider. I read somewhere that it is suggested you tape it down but mine seems to adhere fine.
|
Here's another "pro" vote. I have sewed through mine, but in general I find it very helpful. You do have to keep the back clean though. If it gets lots of lint on it, it won't stick. All you have to do is rinse it with tap water to clean it.
|
I don't care for it either. Didn't stay put.

I have tried the Supreme Slider and the Teflon oven sheets. The supreme slider is very expensive and you can sew over it in error as stated....the Teflon sheets work the same way and are so much cheaper. Be sure to cut a hole under your needle and tape (Blue masking tape or Frog tape) whatever you use down to your table. It's a pain when the bobbin needed changing, but that is a trade off you have to make.
|
i think it's pricey for the value of it
|
Don't waste your money. I got a small one and slide all over, maybe that's why they are called supreme sliders, lol. Way over priced!! The oven liner idea does work but you have to tape it down. You can cut it to size too. I spray pledge on the table and that works too.

I have one that clings like glue to my table. It barely clings to my friends extension table. The surface makes a difference. The slider works when it's on the right surface, I think the package should say that.
|
Had 2 supreme sliders, now use teflon oven liner, like it much better. The price is right.
|
I've had great luck with my Supreme Slider. I think it makes a huge difference when FMQ-ing.
When it wears out, I will try the Teflon oven liner idea. Watson |
Yes it does make a difference. I've got arthritis in thumbs, so it's really a help.
Eventually it got so much lint on the sticky side, it didn't stick to the machine bed. Most of the lint washed off with water, then dry it stuck again. However the corners didn't stick, so I attach it with masking tape. |

I tape mine down on 2 corners with painters tape. Works for me.

It opened up the world of free motion for me, will forever be glad I bought it. I had tried for many years to FM but just couldn't get the hang of it. About 15 yrs ago I bought the Supreme slider at a quilt show (also another system much more expensive at another booth that was a disaster) taped it to my machine & took off, somehow it helped me make the connection between my brain & my hands, I think because it was so slippery. I used it happily for months, finally wore it out by sewing into it (the original sticking system was not as good as the current system from what I've been told). I was going to buy another one then realized I no longer needed it, my hands & brain worked together without it. Since that time I have free motioned dozens of quilts & love doing it. I put on an audio book & take off to my happy place.

I have one an barely used it so can't comment on how well it works, but I have an older SInger 15-91 and when I took the slider off my machine it took some of the decals w/it...so I won't be using it again, at least not w/that machine.

I recently bought the queen size, but haven't used it yet.

Yes, it makes a big difference.

The new thing I have discovered through one of my Facebook forums is the flying carpet sled which is a very large piece of plastic. I made a hole for the needle and it is wonderful. Doesn't move, doesn't get caught up in the quilt, very slippery. there are some discussions under Links and Resources but thought I would put a link here toohttps://www.amazon.com/Flying-Carpet-Sled-BLUE/dp/B001Q8SLE2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1510166843&sr=8-1&keywords=flying+carpet+sled+blue
I tried a big piece of vinyl, a supreme slider, and nothing. I really do think this sled thing is the best for me and my machine. |
works great for me. it adheres to my ectension table so it is not in the way when i change the bobbin. hasn't unstuck yet. it's a keeper.
