Supreme Slider, SewSlip, Oven Liner
 

I have read several threads on the Board about using a Supreme Slider or SewSlip to make it easier to slide your quilt while FMQing. Some have suggested cheaper alternatives - clear vinyl yardage, teflon oven liners and various others. I decided to order a teflon oven liner from Amazon and give it a try. It arrived today and I was disappointed to see that the surface of it is not smooth. It has a texture to it. I'm curious to know if those of you who have used the oven liners have used slick, smooth ones or is the teflon coating of the textured surface sufficient to reduce the drag and allow the quilt to slide easily.

I'll be interested to see the replies to this. I have an oven liner waiting to be used, and I'd like to and another question - how do you fix it securely to your machine so that it won't keep coming adrift or wrinkle up as you drag a quilt over it?
I've got a Supreme Slider and it works very well - probably IS worth the money if you can afford it. I decided to try the oven liner because my new machine is too big for the standard Slider.

If I was going to try an alternative I would go for a vinyl table covering.
I have a slider but usually forget to use it. Try silicone polish I think it is on sewing machine. Check how it affects if any a sewing machine

I used the oven liner and used the 3m tape - the ones for posting paper on walls. worked fine but I also not no problem FMG'ing with the dogfeeds up with nothing on them. I also have had a couple of sliders but they moved while FMQ'ing and I sewed them to the fabric....expensive to replace after the 2nd time so bought the liner, it was fine. Lately I have just been FMQ'ing with the dogfeeds up though....it helps with the tension.

I received the slider for Christmas last year but haven't touched it yet..

I use a few pieces of blue painters tape to hold my supreme slider in place (just in case).

I use the Supreme Slider. It's about six years old maybe older. I don't use tape, it holds in place on my extension table. A quick rinse with water and it's like new.

I have the small Supreme Slider and the large Sew Slip, which actually turned out to be cheaper and works better. I had tried taping vinyl to the bed, but have to say it just wasn't as smooth as the sliders. I did have problems with the Supreme Slider lifting up a couple of times, and even ended up stitching through it once. That has never happened with the Sew Slip and I used it constantly.

If you wipe the underside of the Slider with a damp cloth, its grip improves considerably.

Silicone spray is a good suggeastion too. I spray some onto a cloth then wipe the machine bed, rather than risk spraying the stuff into the motor.

Thanks for the suggestion of painters tape to stick down an oven liner -will give that a go.

I too always have the feeddogs up these days when FMQ'ing - I agree that it helps the tension. But it probably varies from one machine to another.

I used an oven liner when doing my first ever FMQ last week. It has a texture, so I was a little worried, but no problems whatsoever. I just taped it down with regular scotch tape and had no problem. I also bought a cheap pair of garden gloves with little nubbies (?) on the fingers. That made a huge difference with the flow of the quilt. After procrastinating for years about doing FMQ, I decided maybe I could do this!
