Surge Protectors

Do you use a surge protector to protect your machine? If so what brand or type, and, do you think it is the best one for the job?

I use a "Monster brand" but still try to unplug from the outlet if I am home.

All of my machines are on surge protectors. My Bernina sewing machine and serger are on a Belkin. My Singer 221 is on an APC although it probably does not need a surge protector. My iron is on a Staples. They all seem to do their job. I unplug the Belkin when there are thunderstorms in the area and unplug my Singer machine each time I stop using it; but I never unplug the Staples s surge protector. I'm no help on a recommendation. I'd just get one that can withstand the largest surge of electricity.

Wow, didn't know serge protectors had brands.....I just use whatever we have in the house but all of my machines and irons are on one since they make shutting everything off when I leave the room, so much easier.

When buying a surge protecter I look for one that states it is for electronics, yes they may cost a little more, but then our machines are worth it, and would cost alot more to replace.

this is so true :)

I use surge protectors too - but I also unplug when the equipment is not in use... Just a habit that started before surge protectors were common I guess.

I use one for electronics, I don't unplug anything during storms, probably should. Our TV and my laptop is on a battery back up, don't need that for sewing machine.

Ditto! PLUS I always unplug machines, when not using.

Several years ago, our power company had two lines fall and hit each other. (tiny town). Everything not on a surge protector in town was fried. My computer had a $10 Woods from WalMart that saved it. I use them on everything since then.

I do use one but everyone should becareful. Buy the best one you can for your money. Those cheap ones can go bad and the light still works so you think it's still protecting but it isn't. That was one of the first valuable lessons that I was taught when going to IT school.

I use a surge protector for all of my machines, iron and computers. It is just not worth the risk not to. We live in a area where we get tremendous thunder and lightening storms. Beautiful to watch, but can be deadly and costly to your electronic stuff.

Our homeowners insurance policy covers damage by electrical surgers, so I don't worry about it. I do unplug my sewing machines when I'm not using them if I think about it. However, we never unplug the computer or any of the TV's. If we need to let the insurance replace anything, then that is why we have the insurance. I unplug my sewing machines because I can unplug them at the machine and they cost many times the price of the computer or TV.
However, you can have an electrican install a household surge protector outside the house that protects the whole house and is cheaper than replacing even a small TV or sewing machine.

I do use a surge protector, but I unplug my machine when it is not being used, since it is computerized.

I use the battery backup on the computer and on my computer machines (Viking SE) as it protects against the brown outs, also.

I use what we have around, dh buys what is best so I am safe I hope. Has worked for us all these years. I must say though when we are having a big storm we unplug everything.
