Surprise! in the mail today
While in NY last month, a friend heard me going on and on about quilting, this board, my plans, dotcomdotcom's works of art, etc. etc. Though not a quilter or sewist, friend remembered a show of quilts she attended (last year I think) at the Armory in Manhattan. Showed me photos she took there, & they were beautiful, what a show I missed...
Fast forward: today, what arrives in the mail but a package addressed to me. I thought, oh no, I'm not expecting anything, hope it's not some regrettable impulse buy I'd forgotten about... Well - it was the hardcover catalog to that show. I just about fell out. It's a gorgeously printed book with so many full-page reproductions of the quilts, all red-and-white, belonging to a single collector. I love quilts, and I love history, and these quilts span 3 centuries. Just one book - that's all it took to send me over the moon. Bless my friend. |
What a thoughtful and generous gift from your friend. Obviously someone who listens and cares deeply about you. Enjoy.

How delightful!!

I have that book after attending that show! What a treasure you have! Try something in red & white!!

That's one of the best feelings in the world--getting a surprise in the mail, from a thoughtful and generous friend, just for you. The fact that the subject matter is not something she also enjoys, says a lot about her. Some people excel in gift-giving, and I do believe it has a LOT to do with listening. My second DIL is like that. She listens with everything in her, and remembers. My son is very blessed.

It really brought tears to my eyes.
Dotty - I already have a block from the book picked out -- Seven Stars, or Seven Sisters, now to draft it. I don't have red fabric, hmmm - I'm going back to the mountains tomorrow & there was a wonderful quilt shop on the way.;) Must have been phenomenal to have been at the show in person. I am stoked. Also I overcame my fears and found that my town has a quilt guild - will be joining in October. |
What a wonderful friend that thought so much of you to send something she knew you would love.
I think the red and white quilts are wonderful! Have fun making one for yourself. |
What a friend!

Great friend!!

How thoughtful! I remember seeing photos from that exhibit and loved seeing them. I know you will treasure the book AND your friend!
I've always wanted to do a red and white quilt, too! I have a very old red and white Pineapple quilt that my mother had. Sadly, my sisters and I do not remember who quilted it. I've become very committed to labeling my quilts (and talking about it too)... The red fabric in this quilt is just beautiful... good luck with your red and white!! |
What a wonderful gift.

What a generous and thoughtful friend you have, she must treasure your friendship! I've seen pictures of that show, it looked amazing-as a School media specialist (what used to be librarian) I can understand your over the moon feelings!
