Susan Carlson Class

Has anyone taken one of Susan Carlson's Collage classes? I took one last fall (end of October) -- It was fabulous but I have a long way to go on mine :) Would love any insight from anyone who has done a couple of Susan Carlson's method. Thanks!

Wow! I think you are doing very well! Congratulations!

I’ve not taken the class but your collage is beautiful.

Looks like you are off to a great start. I have never taken a class from her.

Barbara Stanbro who blogs as Cat Patches has done several animal portraits and she uses a technique by June Jaeger. Here is a link to the lastest one she did with some information on how she did it. https://catpatches.blogspot.com/2019...ly-sewing.html.

Your collage is looking really good. I've yet to try to tackle something like that.

I think you have a real talent for that. Please finish it and show us.

Your work is excellent. I'm not a fan of collage quilts but admire the amount of creativity involved in making them.

Irishgal, that was a really good link, thanks.

Quiltmama, what fusing medium are you using? Susan Carlson uses glue, where the link that was supplied uses fusible web.

Although I have never taken a class with her, I have her books and have read all her articles on the 'net. Here is one I did using her technique using glue. My daughter's dog, Atlas.

Editted that you asked for any insights about the method....I enjoyed doing this collage using this method and I think it was a good method for this subject, but for myself, I do prefer to use Steam a Seam Lite 2 for my collage work, even though it takes a lot longer. I don't like working with the pins and having to go back and re-glue edges and SaSL2 will stick on but is still moveable until you fuse it down.

Very pretty and such good work.

Hi Watson, for this I’m using glue as that was the way Susan taught in the class. I did use steam a seam for a Laura Heineken quilt but really did not like the stiffness. Your dog is adorable! Amazing job!

Thanks, Quiltymama....I am teaching a class later this summer and am going to be using the glue technique.
Did you glue down the whole piece or leave the edges loose and glue them down later, before you quilted?

Your cat looks fabulous so far...I have not yet done a collage quilt but it’s on my list.

quiltymama 04-27-2019 08:02 AM

Watson, I am just gluing centers for now so fabric may be tucked if needed. Haven’t finished yet so I will either use netting on top (per Susan) or glue edges when ready to quilt.
