Has anyone worked on this quilt. I'm trying to decide if I want to buy the book and try it. I thought it wuld be fun to do a different block each time but wondering how difficult a 6 inch block would be.
|
I got the patterns off the internet when they were available. I have about 18 blocks done. I was hand piecing them. If you like variety they are fine. I got bored, but I still have them.
|
My LQS did this as a BOM. We did not do all the blocks as some were too difficult for some of us less experienced quilters. We did 86 of the 120-something patterns in the book.
They started us out with simpler blocks gradually advancing to the more difficult ones. I consider myself an advanced beginner & learned a lot going from easy to more complicated blocks. I don't know how hard it would be doing it on your own advancing through the blocks. I liked that we were given the fabrics & I didn't have to make a decision on what to use :D . I just finished mine. Will post pictures next time my DD is over to help. |
I think you should always push yourself as a quilter, to do something you've never done before. I looked at it on amazon and theres alot of different blocks and techniques. I think it would be a great challenge and learning experience for a beginner. However time consuming because every block is different. It all depends on your style.

I have about 15 done. Haven't worked on it for quite some time.
|
I have the book, that's gonna be my "big" project for 2012
|
My daughter is doing the Sylvia quilt now. She is about 90% done with the blocks. She only hand pieces and hand quilts - doesn't like sewing machines.

I've finished mine and posted it. There are 140 blocks, but lots of quilters have chosen to do smaller versions. I coordinate a BOW group for Jennifer Chiaverini where we do one block a week. It's a fun, no pressure group and once a month we draw a name out of those who have completed blocks and she wins an Elm Creek Quilter's pin. To join, visit http://www.sylviasbridalsampler.com. Here's my quilt:

Yours is beautiful. Will the group continue for awhile. If I can get a book it will still take a little while until I can get started. |
I have the book! I may have to do this too! :)
Lynda-your quilt is gorgeous!! |
I have the book. It's on my to do list after I finish my Dear Jane. The 6" blocks are going to be huge compared to what I'm used to! :)
I have done some of the blocks, but not in the color scheme I think I'm going for with the SBS. |
Thanks so much!
The group is continuous. We're in the middle of a round, but you join at any time. We go in random order. When we finish all 140 blocks we start over again. If you've already done the block we're doing that week, you can submit any other block. Thankfully, we take December off! Over 6,000 blocks are already in our Webshots album (sylviasbridalsampler) and you can check out the beautiful color combos quilters have come up with. |
Lynda, I have never seen such beautiful variety of blocks lik in your Sylvia's quilt! You did an awesome job....very talented. I'm not that far advanced yet....but maybe some day? lol....Thanks for sharing....

Ruth - thanks very much! I actually used the quilt as a learning tool. I was still a beginner when I started it and I tackled the easier blocks first and worked my way up to the more difficult ones. In some cases I took shortcuts, like eliminating Y seams by making a corner square into two corner triangles. Gradually my skills increased and I would say I'm at the intermediate level now.
It's easy to pick and choose with a large sampler like this. There are some applique blocks and we have quilters who have no interest in trying them, so they either skip them completely or substitute non-applique blocks. It's a lot of fun. |
My local library has the book so I may begin borrowing it and get to making the blocks!

I'm working on mine right now.
To (hopefully) keep myself from getting bored, I'm making myself do the blocks in the order they're shown on the quilt. No jumping ahead to the "easy" blocks! I think I'm on the 3rd block in the 2nd row. The fabric I'm using is the Moda Pom Pom de Paris / French General line. Pinks, "faded" reds, and ivories. Pic below. :) Oh! There appears to be a mistake in the book, on page 17, the Bachelor's Puzzle block. I made the "B" squares 2" as instructed, but they came out too small. 2-1/2" squares came out right. |

The errata for the book can be found at the publisher's site: http://www.ctpub.com/client/client_p...rata/10686.cfm Hope this helps! |
I bought the book and have made several blocks. I love it, but got sidetracked on other projects so it is in my UFOs. I hope to get it back out and work on it this winter. I really enjoyed making the blocks I have, some were more difficult than others, but nothing I couldn't do so far. I loved the quilt and the story about it in the book, so decided I was up for the challenge. I still am, just need to get back after it. Thanks for the gentle reminder.
|
I love the book even though I haven't started the 6" blocks. I use it whenever I need an idea for a quilt or project and draft the patterns to the size I want. Although the BOW sounds like fun and I might give that a try.

Go for it! I'm making a Dear Jane (4 1/2" blocks) and although I've been sewing and quilting for many years I've learned a ton from this project. It's a great challenge. My recommendations are: use the best fabric possible, use a dry iron with spray starch, pre-wash all your fabrics, buy an add-a-quarter ruler. There is a great website called Twiddletails that focuses on Dear Jane but has a boatload of info on piecing small blocks. I use her freezer paper/paper piecing method. It is so much better than using regular paper and having to tear all the paper out at the end. Have fun with this project!
|
No, I have never done one, but it sure is pretty.
|
I am working on mine- I just do a block when I feel like it and it will take a while. It is a beautiful quilt.
|
I think all of you ladies that have done this are awsome. It is far to big of a project for me to attempt to I admire you for doing it. I do so want to finish something I start and I'm ashamed of all the kits, fabric and patterns I have that are just begging me to make something. I think I am the worlds queen of unfinish projects.
|
I have lots of unfinished projects too and I'm going to try to finish them. I thought this project would keep me from getting bored and I could just work on it when I need a break from the other proijects. I'm not going to rush it. If I do 1 block every week or 2 will be okay. I'll just keep piling them up and see where it goes.
|
I think that's the way to do it. It took me about a year to finish all the blocks, but some weeks I only did one block and other weeks I'd do five or six. Just enjoy it as you go!

Oh wow, that is some quilt. All6" blocks?
|
It is similar to the Dear Jane Quilt.
|
Thanks so much! It is all 6" blocks, which I no longer fear!
|
I have the book from the library right now! Just copied off some of the blocks that I really liked. Don't want to make the whole quilt. I am reading the last book in the series, "Union Quilters!"! Wow! I have enjoyed this whole series very much...... a MUST READ !!!
