Is t-shirt flannel ok for quilting?
 

I want to back my quilt with plaid flannel. I've been in the store and I just love the softest plaid flannel. It's also loose. I know it would make a comfy flannel sleep shirt.

But is it ok for a quilt? My grandson likes soft and cozy, so I would love to use it. Is it ok?

Sure its OK, just prewash & dry in hot dryer so it shrinks before using. Buy extra, loosely woven flannel shrinks quite a lot. It is wonderfully soft, & cozy when it comes out of the dryer.

I agree with ckcowl, I've had flannel shrink A LOT, about 10" per yard, because it's loosely woven. nice to hand quilt with too.

Sounds great, but I would definitely wash and dry it first since flannel will shrink and your t-shirts will not.

I think if its treated the right way, any fabric can be quilted. Right now I'm finishing up a log cabin done in fleece. Someone I know said you can't do that because it'll stretch. I use my serger and it looks so nice that I started out making a lap and decided to make a full sized quilt. It looks great and the seems lay so nicely

I love flannel to back a quilt! But there are things to be careful in buying flannel....buy the best quality you can find, it does make a difference....flannel may shrink, not always but most of the time....buy extra length and prewash and dry in a hot dryer (beware of excess lint, clean the lint trap every 15 minutes or so).....there is wide backing flannel available which makes it much easier.
