T-Shirt Quilt with fleece as backing? Need advice...
 

I'm making a t-shirt quilt for my DH. I have all the squares cut & fused. So we're looking at backing and he's decided on a particular fleece material that he LOVES. Will this make the quilt too heavy? If so, would skipping the batting make it easier to quilt? I guess my fear is that if it's too heavy, I'll have lots of those little folds that get quilted in on the back. Would love to hear your comments and advice. Thanks very much!!!

I've not really worked with fleece backings, but I don't know why it wouldn't work. My suggestion would be to make a couple extra shirt blocks. Make one with fleece and batting, and one with just the fleece. See which one he'd prefer. I'm not a fleece fan because it makes me sweat, so I've never used it on a quilt.

I made several quilts this year with fleece backing. I really love the fleece on the back. I will tell you that as I was binding them I wondered if I should have used some low loft batting. The reason why I wish I would have put batting in is partially due to the pattern on the fleece. I have a fleece that has a white background and. In that white area I can see the quilt top showing through... and that bothers me a bit. Now I don't know if anyone else will even notice, but I do. As far as the weight of the quilt, I think it depends on what the rest of the quilt is. I have some quilt tops that are tshirts and jeans and I think those quilts are heavy enough without the batting. The others are all tshirt quilt tops adding the batting would have been fine. (Some tshirts are heavier than other tshirts)

Low loft - like Warm & Natural or something like that?

I have just finished one with the fleece backing, cotton and flannel squares, and I used a square of batting, but this is for my Grandson who is always cold. Still have a lot of shagging to do on it.

I have machine quilted a quilt using fleece as backing. I added a very thin poly batt. It made a nice and warm quilt and was so soft.

I've made several tshirt quilts with fleece backing, and did not use any batting. The fleece I used was quite thick and I felt eliminated the need for additional batting.

I have used fleece for my backings with no problem. I did not use batting.
