T-Shirt Quilt Questions

1 Attachment(s)
Hi Everyone,

I am brand new to quilting. I took a class about two months ago on basic quilting. I have been wanting to make a t-shirt quilt out of all of our old collegiate item. The teacher said that not every square had to be a 12 x 12 square with a 2.5" border. I am a little confusing and am wondering how to put the quilt together if all the pieces are not the same size.

What do I do? Please advise me :)

Thank you

Sierra

Your quilt looks like it is coming together nicely. If you have one big block that measures 12 1/2 x 12 1/2 then you could have two smaller blocks next to it that when put together have the same measurement. Don't know if that makes sense.

Just start filling in the gaps with your 2 fabrics. I would sew alternating piano keys strips for the bottom of the right side with the zig zag going vertical. The the upper left of that block, I would fill that with that corner with the black zig zag, Underneath, I would stitch a black strip and then an orange strip. Just preview which of the fabric will look best. Measure the gap and then add you two 1/4" seam allowance. JUST HAVE FUN !!

Are you questioning if it looks good in the picture or how to sew it together?
IF it's how it looks, I'd say 'put it together' - looks GREAT!
IF you're asking HOW to put it together, I would say either in rows or many 'y-seams'.

If you look at other quilts on the internet, you will see examples of what the teacher is (possibly) talking about. Some don't have any sashing at all, some are fit together like puzzles. I think oftentimes not having the blocks all the same size adds interest to the quilt.

I just finished one that was all different sizes. I just filled in with the backs cut to size. Check T-shirt quilts on Pinterest. If I could ever figure out how to post a picture, I would.
