I made 6 as Christmas gifts 2 years ago, each different, and used a print fabric that coordinated with the front or blended with the recipients decor. Each front was machine embroidered. Most fronts were of a poly-cotton linen like fabric but one was of black fake suede embroidered with long stem red roses. Came out stunning but sadly have no pictures to show.
Last year I did 7 more (brugandy centers embroidered with a multitude of multi-sized delicate snowflakes in a irridecent metalic thread through all layers) and bordered all around with the cutest snwomen faces. Used washable felt as backing and skipped the batting. The felt was easy to work with and has held up very well through numerous machine washings. Inexpensive to use too.

I always back my tablerunners with a nice fabric I like so I can use the runner on both sides. If I bind it with black, I will find a nice fabric that has black in it and use that. Most of my Christmas runners have a Fall fabric on the back so I can flip it and use it for the two seasons.
