Tackle Box as a Kit

I am thinking about getting a fishing tackle box to be my kit when I quilt at church on Tuesdays.

I am wondering if any of you have one, and is it worth it? Just now I have a little box with a snap on top, but whenever I want something from the bottom, I have to take out just about everything else to get to it.

Jackie Spencer 04-03-2014 04:36 PM

I have used a tackle box for years for all my Crazy Quilting stuff. Embroidery Floss, Silk Ribbon, all the different needles, beads, charms. I love it. Has worked very well for me.

I think a tackle box is a great idea if you can find one that fits your needs. I use one for my cake decorating supplies (tips, bags and food coloring). I think I need one for some of my sewing accessories.

I use a wooden artist's supply chest -- about the same size as a tackle box, but the configuration works better for my needs. There's a removable tray on the top for tools, then the lower portion has sections you can configure to fit your needs or leave open. It's a nice solution for me.

Iuse a plastic box recommended by a young man in the fishing department at Wal Mart. He told me that his grandmother, who is a quilter, uses that box. It has several compartments but does not lift like the tackle box. They are slim enough to fit into my sewing machine cabinet drawers. I bought three to stack and they are in constant use--and for under $5 each. The tackle box looks great. froggyintexas

What a great idea! I could use 2 or 3 of those. Thanks for the hint. :)

Peckish 04-03-2014 05:14 PM

Not a bad idea. I think a tackle box would be a tad too large for me, unless they make pretty small ones. I use a plastic box that is about 6" wide, 3" long, and 1.5" deep. It's the perfect size for me, I use it for handwork and I don't need much more than extra needles, two or three bobbins with different colored thread, some small scissors, and a thimble.

I think the tackle box is a great idea. There is also a makeup box like that at walmart. It is pink and also light blue. That also would work.

CanoePam 04-03-2014 06:13 PM

I use a small tackle box for my traveling sewing supplies, and I have done so for years. Mine has a lift out tray and a larger compartment on the bottom. I love it since it is easy to carry and waterproof. Lots cheaper than something equivalent at the sewing store.

I used a tackle box for my art supplies when I painted. Now I use one (not the same one;)) for my cake decorating supplies. I've never thought of getting one for my quilting tools. Good idea!

auntpiggylpn 04-03-2014 06:23 PM

A great idea! I have an old fashioned ie "vintage" wicker sewing box. It has a plastic compartment that lifts out, a lid that latches and a wicker handle. I got it at a garage sale for a couple of bucks. On the bottom someone wrote "Happy Birthday Mom. Love Betty. March 27, 1964". It's older than me! I know that I have seen sewing boxes at Hancock Fabrics and Joann's.

tesspug 04-03-2014 06:26 PM

Remember Kaboodles? They were like fishing boxes, but in cuter colors and designs. I think Target still carries them.

Anniedeb 04-03-2014 07:46 PM

I use one, and I love it. It's double sided, and has movable inserts so you can customize the size compartments you need. I just have to be sure the latches are secure before flipping it over. Don't know where it came from, (it was a gift) but it was billed as a multi-use case...fishing, crafts, tools, etc.

sweetana3 04-04-2014 02:49 AM

I have a hardware store tote that has pockets and elastic holders for all kinds of things. I added a cup to hold pens, and pencils and holders for my tape measures and pins. It holds small rulers, all my scissors, etc. The little mesh pockets on the side holds my rotary cutter blades in their holders.

I can see everything and the handle at the top makes it portable. I think I found it at Home Depot. If I was looking at a tool box, I would make sure it was big enough.

Zinda 04-04-2014 03:06 AM

I use small fishing lure boxes for different pressure feet for my sewing machines. Stays shut and has worked well.

Carrie in PA 04-04-2014 03:44 AM

Tackle boxes are perfect and i have used them for craft supplies since i was very little. I currently use a caboodles makeup box that i've had since i was around 14 for my hand sewing kit.

Check out the smaller tool boxes. They have really nice ones with tops that lift like a tackle box and little compartments on them. They even make them in nicer colors for women. My daughter just bought a purple one for her beading supplies and it was half the price of the beading supply boxes.

nanna-up-north 04-04-2014 03:58 AM

I think a tackle box is a great idea. I started collecting vintage sewing boxes so I have a few that look like a tackle box. You know, the ones that fold out.....

Or, you could go with a tool box. I was asking for one at Christmas that was pretty large and on rollers. The bottom part was big enough that a FW would fit inside and then the upper box had lots of divisions where you could put things. It was made by Stanley. I saw them at Lowe's and Home Depot. I didn't get one because my DH said that once I got everything in it I wouldn't be able to lift it into the car. I think I could. I may still go get one.

mic-pa 04-04-2014 04:26 AM

I use a plastic box that snaps togiether with several compartments Bought it at Joann's. There are several options available. its my on-the-go box with all my supplies.

Sewnoma 04-04-2014 05:28 AM

I inherited a green & clear plastic sewing 'basket' from my DH's grandmother. It's configured sort of like a tackle box. I've seen boxes a lot like it in thrift stores for really cheap. You might try there and be able to find something unique and interesting to use as your box!

Mine is definitely made specifically for sewing; it has two lift-out trays with various compartments (including pegs for spools of thread) and the bottom area can hold bigger tools or a bit of fabric.

It's kind of getting brittle; the plastic isn't aging all that great. I've lost a thread peg or two. But overall it's still totally useful, and I love the vintage look of it, and the fact that it belonged to DH's grandma.

maminstl 04-04-2014 05:37 AM

I use a smallish plastic toolbox that I bought at Harbor Freight for less than $5 - works great for me. They have lots of different options.

jetayre 04-04-2014 05:48 AM

I have three tackle boxes...different sizes...they all have life out tops and one has compartments on top as well as a lift-out inside. I use them for my jewelry making, my sewing needles, cutter blades, etc., my painting supplies, etc. They are one of the best ideas for keeping things together I have had, plus the handles to carry. Get them on sale at hardware stores, Joann's. etc.

AliKat 04-04-2014 06:42 AM

My tackle box is for my sewing supplies. As I seem to have a lot more items to take for sewing garments. It is easy to locate among all the quilting things I have.

I use a almost largish see through cosmetic carry all for my quilting supplies. It holds all but my rulers.

sweetpea 04-04-2014 06:44 AM

tool box on wheels with a top part that has large and small compartment with locking lids. in the botton you can put your larger prices of fabric, or you lunch and not have some many thing to care in for the group meeting.

I bought this box at Joann's. It is made by CREATIVE OPTIONS. It works just like a tackle box. It was the best quilting purchase I've ever made! It holds everything I might need when I'm away. So I set it next to my machine at home, and when I go elsewhere I just close it and go, without worrying that I forgot something. My quilting buddy liked it so much, she bought one of her own, and she LOVES it! You won't regret it!

I use a Plano tackle box from Bass Pro Shop. I lay it flat and the clear top lid unsnaps. The bottom is green and it unsnaps also. I have marking pens, pencils, pens, presser feet, bobbins and bobbin thread, rippers, small folded bags for threads while at class, roll of scotch tape for the bag, extra pins, etc in the top. The bottom has different scissors, pin cushion with pins, rotary cutter, magnification glasses in a glass case, etc. You can unsnap one and leave the other one snapped and open them as needed. Have tried many different kinds and this works for me. It holds everything I need and probably more.

FANTASTIC!! I'm glad to see that I am not the only one thinking in this direction. I will check out these other models before I decide on which one is best for me. Thanks so much for all the terrific comments.

Aurora 04-05-2014 02:38 AM

I prefer tool boxes, they offer more size options for scissors, rotary cutters, extra needles, thread, etc. I find keeping it on the table or chair next to me is very convenient.

misseva 04-05-2014 05:58 AM

I have two tackle boxes. Brand name Magnum. Two sided, lots of adjustable compartments. I have my embroidery thread in them sorted by number (I have all the DMC thread up to approx. year 2000. Haven't kept up with new colors since then. I also have some clear two sided boxes from the sports section of Wal Mart that I keep thread in. They snap together and are must less expensive than the boxes from a quilting store/site.

annievee 04-05-2014 07:19 AM

I use a tackle box my DH gave me years ago--no lift out drawers, just folds back--it is great for storage !

TeresaA 04-05-2014 07:37 AM

I bought a tackle box thinking it was a good idea, but I found that its compartments weren't right for my needs. I'm back to the aluminum cookie cans. The tackle box sits pretty much empty. I'm hoping to some day use it for fishing! LOL.

I also bought one of those screw bins, with the little plastic drawers? Well, wonder of wonders, it gathers dusts inside of the drawers. I still put things into it, but I have slowly moved many of them to plastic bags inside -- you guessed it -- another cookie can.

roserips 04-05-2014 08:24 AM

I took a basket and made a liner for it with pockets and elastic on the sides I loved it my tools fit in the pockets and my project fit in the center. I have used tackle boxes as Make up kits, Nail supplies, great for crazy quilting. But I love my basket for to go quilting.

DonnaFreak 04-05-2014 12:46 PM

I've never used anything else. I have one that has clear compartments in the lid as well as a lift-out tray inside. Love it! :c)

purplefiend 04-06-2014 08:53 AM

I use a fishing lure box for bobbin storage, they are double sided.I have several brands of machines & most take a different bobbin, helps me keep my bobbins organized.
This is what I use: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Plano-Medium-Double-Sided-Organizer/16351085

tessagin 04-06-2014 10:36 AM

I got a tackle box few years ago at discount store. Has a double tray on top for thread and needles with separate openings. Then another tray inside for scissors and other notions and marking tools. Thebottomofthe box is big enough for larger scissors rulers and templates. The top is see thrugh. I paid $7 for it.

Cybrarian 04-06-2014 11:41 AM

Whatever you decide to shop for I'd make a list of what you want to put in it. I'd also measure the 1 or 2 largest items you want to put in it. I say this because I don't always judge space well from memory and I would do this to make sure I got it right the first time :)

I use a Plano two level tackle box for my quilting supplies and it is absolutely brilliant! Each layer closes separately and the top layer has a larger area where you can put your six inch square ruler. The bottom layer is deeper and works very well for thread and scizzors, cutters, pens etc. The box is is a light teal color so it even looks nice! I really like mine a lot.
