What you are making is a 6 pointed star. There is an easier way of making it, however it requires some fancy cutting.

I just finished doing a tumbling blocks wall hanging by Marci of Alicias Attic and she has a great design for how to make 6 pointed stars that do not require "set in" seams. There is a utube tute on it.

Oh yes, that iron and mat is right beside me. All the stars were hand pieced and believe me one of the major keys is pressing those seams open.

I just like the challenge.
