Tamed my fabric stash......
 

Well, I thought I had a lot of fabric until I put it all on comic book boards. Of course none of my flannel is wrapped on these boards, I was afraid it would take too much room with all that nap. The rolling drawer unit to the right has fat quarters in the top drawers and a few large odd shaped scraps in the bottom two drawers. I see a LQS visit in my near future to add more to my collection.

I really need to get into the sewing room, but can't until the quilt inspector has finished her nap on my lap. She really helps me feed my addiction to The Quilting Board............that's my story & I'm sticking to it!

woooo hooo!!! Looks great! Don't you just love just looking at it? ;-) ... and it will be sooooo easy to pull it out, use what you need... and put it right back!

Looks great but we will have to wait for the quilt inspector's decision!!! It is good to know that I am not the only person whose movements are hampered by a sleeping pet.

I do have one question............how do you mark your individual fabric pieces for yardage amount? As you can see in the picture, the little return address labels are not sticking very well.

The quilt inspector is a bit upset about this new arrangement in the shelving unit. See that lower right cube of homespuns & quilting books? It used to have a few pieces of nice soft flannel laying in it & she claimed it as her very own napping area......now she has chosen a new spot on a folded up comforter in the master bedroom closet.

Oh, I do love looking at this and having instant access to my stash. I used to have it stored in 2 plastic totes, it was a real pain whenever I had to look for a certain fabric. I had to drag the tote out of the closet after rearranging all the other totes sitting on top of it, it always somehow found it's way to the bottom of the stack.......lol

OH, your stash looks so neat and tidy. I'd let you and your inspector come and straighten up my mess of a stash anytime.

What are comic book boards, or did I miss it somewhere?

Looks great. I am kinda hoping mine shrinks down that much. This will give me a chance to weed out some fabric too. I wish there were a way to get something to stick on the fabric for yardage. I would write where I couldn't see it knowing me. I just received my comic boards in the mail today.I thought they seemed light and bendy but I guess its not an issue once you get the fabric on. I at one time, started using foam board but got tired of cutting it so figured since so many others use these I would try it.

Comic book boards are what collectors use to store their collectible comic books alongwith a plastic bag to protect them during storage. They are acid free. I ordered mine from Amazon, but if you have a comic book store nearby you might be able to get them there because shipping was high. I bought the silver size.

I bought the comic book boards and they are sitting in my closet on top of my stash. I just have to find a day to work on this. At this point, I have stash in so many places that I don't know what I have. I love how they look all lined up like your own little fabric store.

I'm warming to the idea of the boards, but not there yet. Still in the white 28 qt. storage boxes. Still a pain to find what I want, but then I get to rummage through all the boxes of fabrics looking for the perfect piece. Nice going on organizing your stash. Love your quilt inspector. I have three - 2 kitties and a dog!

Your stash looks wonderful - don't you just love being able to see it? As for yardage - I labeled a few of my pieces (just pinned a scrap of paper with the yardage written on it). But, my boards are 10" so I know one wrap is 20", two is 40" so close to a yard. I just count the wraps for a rough estimate - much like counting wraps on a bolt in the fabric store. Hope this helps! Boy! I can only dream of being that organized. Looks wonderful.

I spent January going through my stash. I read Bonnie Hunt's Leaders and Enders for inspiration and cut, cut, cut some "offensive" odd pieces! Now I have little stacks already cut up that I have found really inspiring as I piece tops for Project Linus. I also have stacks of squares for four and nine patch "L & E's" right by my machine and I absolutely can not believe how many I have gotten together effortlessly. Bonnie's a genius!
And my stash is so much more accessible! I have a stack of projects ready and waiting and I can actually see everything now if I need something. I used a two sided book case and have it free standing in my guest room. Following trips to Mardens in Maine and to Marshall Dry Goods in Arkansas last year, I had to get organized! Yes, I am the lucky quilter whose DH sends her back into quilt/fabric shops because she hasn't bought enough yet! LOL!

I have a roll of adding machine tape. I cut off about 5 inches and write all my info on it and stick the paper in the fold of the fabric. I can even note on it if the fabric has been washed or not, or any other info I think I need. LOL It's so much easier this way!

I have all my fabric wrapped around acid free hard "plastic" (it isnot real plastic, but made of a composition that looks & acts like plastic) Anyway, I type the name of manufacturer, the date purchased, the amount on the bolt & other pertinent info on a paper & tape it to the bottom right of the bolt. I completely cover the paper with tape. Whenever I use anything off that bolt, I make a notation of the current amount now on the bolt. I do have to pull out the bolt & lift up the fabric to see the inf, but I didn't want anything taped to the fabric. It works for me. Good luck & keep on building your stash. :)

There are clips you can buy to hold the fabric on the boards (I forget what they are called). Then you can slide a piece of paper under the clips with your info on them. I would remove the sticky labels as the adhesive will harm the fabric over time.

Looks great and I agree, you do need more fabrics to keep them standing straight. I have mostly large pices and I fold them with a ruler. I lay them flat, always have enough for what I want to make. I am making scrap quilts now, I let them pile up.

It looks very nice. I have some Polar Notions boards that I bought a long time ago and have never used.

The tuts showing how to fold fabric inspired me. I took my 7 bins of fabric and folded them so that they now only take up 2 shelves - instead 7. I hated having to look through the bins to find a fabric. Now I can see all 800+ pcs at a glance. Even better is that I picked out a fabric and got it out of the stack without disrupting the other pcs. I love how much I learn from folks on the board. When I learn how to use my camera and get pics onto my computer I'll post the results of all my folding.

I think you need to go on a shopping trip. I think everyone needs to go shopping for more fabric;) I love your kitty.
