Teaching 4H'er to Quilt.
 

Just wanted to ask if anyone has worked with 4H students with quilting. I had two girls 16 and 18 that wanted to make quilts this year. One was a t-shirt quilt for the 18 year old and a jelly roll quilt for the younger one. They both completed their quilts. I found out earlier this week both 4 H projects are going to Missouri State Fair during August. I really would like to give both of the girls a congrats but not sure what I should do. Do you think a congrats card or certificate would be enough. Thanks for your suggestions.

and make that with a topper that is a small quilt block of some sort. :)

I think a congratulatory card would be nice. I help a 4h-er here in IN. This year her category (7th grade) was a holiday or seasonal item. She made a set of four snowman placemats and got a reserve champion at the county level. I do have a question for you...we have to turn in a skills card with five skills marked (6 starting next year in senior div). Did your girls have to do that? I have looked ahead at the skills and, to be honest, they are more geared to garment sewing rather than quilting. It will be really hard for this young girl to exhibit any kind of a quilt (tee-shirt, raggy, tied, etc) due to that skills list. Just curious.

I think they would really like a card. People of all ages like getting mail still.

Note to Pam B - There was no skills level to mark. I also was asked to judge the sewing and quilting items at our local Fair, (I could not judge the quilting students) and the guide lines for the judges were for sewing, not quilting. The woman that judged the quilts was just a sewer and had never quilted. Thanks for the reply.

We always had a dinner/award at the end of the year. We showed pics of the year's events. Their pics and the quilts could be displayed at that dinner, if you have anything like that.I always X amount of money to spend and the all the girls got Joann's gift cards then too. At Make it With Wool they always got more fabric, sewing baskets, good scissors, things like that. I think recognition from you, before their peers would be good.

Thanks for the cards and also the ribbon ideas. The girls took their left over fabric, so I cannot use that but I know I have several mini quilt block patterns that would make rally cute ribbons for them. Thanks again.

We are active in 4H in our area. One of the things we have to consider when obtaining judges is, while many sewers quilt, not all quilters are sewers(seamstress).They can be two very different animals! Thanks for helping these girls.

You were their teacher/leader? They should be sending you a "thank you"! As for ribbons, didn't they get ribbons and premiums at the county/local exhibit, and that is what moved them up to the state level? Of course, any card or recognition you give them would be great and will encourage them to do more projects next year.
