Has anyone out there been involved in this? My guild has an opportunity to do this and hopefully get some of the youngest intested. Any suggestions as "how to" would be appreciated.

What fun to able to teach a skill and then turn the girls back over to their leader! I was a Girl Scout leader for many years and taught other leaders for several.

WE did a sewing exercise with my daughters troop, and the mothers did most of the work!!!! Was not happy. Luckily, I have been teaching Sarah myself, and she is doing fine.

what age would probably depend on how you would go about it. I miss Girl Scouts, can't wait until my DD is old enough

When I as a leader many, many years ago, I had my troop make doll size quilts. I only had my sewing machine, so they were both hand pieced and machine pieced. Each girl got a chance to learn how to sew on the machine. We used 6 inch squares if I remember right. Very simple, but it taught the concept and got their feet wet.

Not girl scouts but I have taught 4-H girls.

The motto is be prepared. Make up some pre-cut kits for small quilts and have a completed one on hand for them to refer to. Begin by showing them how to cut the fabric and give them the kits and show them a row at a time. Provide patterns if age level is ready. You will find that some of the girls will catch on easily and others will be disintrested or simply not crafty. If using machines, try to have enough machines for at least 1/2 the girls expected. Remember they are slow and it may take several meetings. -- Have fun!

I think that is a great idea! I sure wish they would teach sewing/cooking in school again.

We did quilting at a lockin that way some of the girls could quilt while others could do other projects and then switch out when they got finished. Or could have different stations some cutting, some sewing, some quilting. We asked if parent had sewing machines to please bring them also. Loved working with the girls.
