Teaching a new quilter and an early birthday gift to boot!!!

I had a wonderful day today that I would love to share. I spent the day working with a friend and showing her everything thing I could so she could make her first quilt top. Yay!

She's been slowly easing into this, mere months ago she said she would never make a quilt. LOL! We've spent our time together doing other crafty things, we made something for Christmas together, we each made a slouchy bag (with grommets!), and lastly we made aprons.

A week ago she decided that she may like to try out a quilt top. After picking up my jaw off my desk, and not wanting to give her a chance to think about it, I whisked her off to the quilt shop during our lunch break!

She decided that she would like to make a simple quilt using a jelly roll so we chose one, I don't have a name for it, but basically it's starting with a 2 1/2 inch square from one strip, using another strip create a square around it, then using a 3rd strip create one more square around the whole thing.

She chose a pretty Moda jelly roll in something so not her comfort colour zone (usually a brown/grey). Not only that, I may have caught her when she was hungry (remember, we were on our lunch break)...so being a bit woozy, her defenses were low and somehow she also picked out a bundle of 9 fat quarters to make a suduko quilt too! Bright purples and red fabric!

Wahoo!!!!

So we spent today cutting and piecing and we both managed to make enough blocks for half a quilt (I'm using a roll of Robert Kaufman's Glam Garden fabrics...so bright and full of colour).

I think she may be fully hooked as when I was packing up to go back home she asked if I was interested in stopping by tomorrow LOL.

Unfortunately, my 2 children may feel neglected if I go off sewing two days in a row. But, I have a funny feeling that come Monday morning at work she will be bringing in all her blocks to show me (she did that with the apron and the bag, she really likes to complete something before moving on to anything else).

As if the day couldn't get any better, she surprised me with a gift. She called it my early birthday present (my birthday is in May so it's really early).

A Gingher rotary cutter.

Oh my word!!!! I couldn't believe it. I've been a needleworker for years and I have a couple of Gingher embroidery scissors that I guard well. They are like gold.

Now I have a Gingher rotary cutter too!!!!! I'm just so pleased I can't even stand it.

I hope everyone else is having a great weekend, time to relax for the evening and just enjoy. Take care!

What a wonderful story. I only wish I had someone that enthuiastic to quilt with. Thank you for sharing your story with us. BTW congratulations on the Gingher rotary cutter...she sounds like an equally wonderful person that appreciates your friendship.
