Technically speaking...

I am in need of some advice in regards to a quilt I am designing for one of my sons who will be graduating from High School next summer.

He has a gaming YouTube channel and designed the logo for it himself. What I was thinking, was to take the logo and somehow do a picture of it on the quilt, using 2.5-inch squares. That may be asking too much. LOL.

Is there someone who could take the picture, and kind of pixelate it so that I can graph it out? or a program that will convert the picture into a piecing chart, kind of like how they have for turning photographs into cross stitch patterns?

Any other suggestions are welcome. I would like the picture to be larger than a standard sized piece of printer paper. More to the tune of 24 inches by 36 inches, or in that ball park.

I hope that all made sense! My plan was to do a burst block arrangement on the front, and the logo on the back of the quilt. It will make the quilt two-sided, as well.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

~Lisa

For starters, maybe you could take the logo to a printing shop that can do major enlarging?

Then get several copies made so that you can work with them and see what happens.

You could draw grid lines over the enlarged logo and then (maybe) modify the shapes into squares and triangles to resemble the logo.

The smaller the grid, the more detail can be captured.

You could also send the picture to spoonflower and they could print it any size you want. Instead of breaking it up, you could treat it as a center panel.

another way could be to copy the design from his page and paste it onto a word document. once there you could enlarge it and the pixels add on automatically past the 200 percent. just an idea.

I believe I can pixelate it in Photoshop. I'll PM you.

Without seeing the logo, I don't know if this is relevant ...
..... perhaps you might do the logo as an applique?
rather than pixelating, graphing and piecing.

Perhaps you could give us the link to your son's site, so we can see the logo?
Thanks!

Sorry, I asked for your son's website to see the logo.
Apparently that would be against the rules, as I have already been taken to task on that.

No idea, whether you could post the actual logo here, but I would think you could .... should be no different than posting a quilt photo. But who am I to know? ... I am sure we will both be set straight very quickly, on this, if it is not allowed

You could use https://www.youpatch.com/

It's a husband and wife team. You can pay for the pattern after you see your pixelated image that includes fabric requirements, cutting instructions, etc.

How about a photo -multiple to achieve the size you want- and then printing it using fabric designed to go through your ink jet printer?

Here's another idea, as QuiltE said - turn the logo into applique. I did that for a friend who graduated from OSU (Oregon State). I took the image of their mascot, enlarged it, and appliqued it onto this quilt.

The pixelating and squares sounds so intriguing to me. I'm going to follow this thread. I'm making a bed topper for my grandson with his favorite roblox character. He makes you tube videos - he is just 9 and I watch the videos and they are cute. Anyway I just had the picture of the character enlarged and traced onto steam a seam 2 and am appliqué - ing it. I traced each feature and used different fabrics to make him dimensional. I sewed around each section. The character is about 18" tall. I'm going to cut it out and appliqué it to the fabric. Maybe a thin border. And simple quilting. It is not my most fun project. But I do love him. Regarding the pixelating I saw a quilt of a saxophone based on a counted cross stitch pattern. Same idea. Lots of squares corresponding to the sax and background. Son in law plays sax so that is in my plan. I'm looking forward to everyone's suggestions. Please let us know what approach you take, Beehiveof9

Great Job Peckish .... the scrappy squares around the logo are so simply done. Yet with the logo, the whole quilt really makes quite an impact.

I love the appliqué suggestion, however if you want to create a pixelated logo, just print the logo onto graph paper. Then you can use the graph paper as your pattern and make each square however large it need to be to give you the size logo you want.

so many wonderful ideas....How will you choose?

Craftsy has a free class called "Pictures to Pixel Quilts."

You might want to Google using search words "convert image to pixel art online". Looks like youcould take a photo, upload it, and pixelate it for FREE on line.

Debbie Ness 06-28-2017 05:57 AM

there is a free website, www.pic2pat.com, where you can select a picture and the program will convert to a crossstitch pattern with adjustable numbers of stitches and colors. of course, the more stitches, more detail.

Wow... lots of wicked smart people on here. I am so technically challenged! Okay, I hope it is okay if I do this here, but here is his YouTube channel. You can see the logo there.

I like the applique idea as well. The example shown was amazing! Love it.

Look into the instructor, Janet Foggs method of doing a picture. Once you get the hang of it it's a pretty neat way of doing a picture. If you can't find info on her website, email me at:[email protected] and I will try to email you back an outline of her method.

I love you Beaver quilt. I live in Beaver Country, and your quilt would bring a premium price here. Beautiful, and you did an amazing job on the appliqué.

You have all given wonderful ideas and advice! Still exploring options here. Thank you so much! I knew this was the right place to come for guidance.

So, here is his logo: (I checked the link I provided and the logo did something wonky)

Thank you! I wish I could sell them, but since the logo is licensed, I'm only allowed to make one and give it away. Otherwise I'd have to pay licensing fees. :(

I turned my son's logo into a quilt by drawing it onto graph paper then making the squares the size I needed to make it into the size I wanted the quilt to be. It came out perfect. His logo is Fu; 2 balls inside a circle.
