Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative to the $30 Supreme Slider? It has a side that grips the bed of the sewing machine and table, and has a smooth top to make fabric slide easily over the sheet when you are free motion quilting. I tried one in a class for my stitch regulator, and think it is a great tool, but not sure of the price.

IMHO, it's worth the price. because they last a long time. If you are doing FM quilting, get the one with the small hole, so the feed dogs are covered, instead of the one that has the rectangle cut out for the feed dogs.

i saw teflon sheets in the cooking section of some stores alot cheaper than at quilt shows

I got a teflon sheet from Joanns , hanging on the wall with a coupon $4.00 It is a sheet

I actually take my machines apart from time to time...and one time when I took my Janome apart, I thought, "Many this table part of my machine is sure worn...so I got my husband's Turtle Wax for his car, (not used in years, but don't tell him I actually used it...he might want me to do the cars!) Any how, waxing and polishing my whole machine a couple of times really, really made FMQ much easier....so now I sneak out to the garage from time to time and wax the only thing that really needs it!

you can purchase teflon from s bolt like material from your local quilt store.

The teflon on the bolt is more like the silver ironing board cover and is heat resistant. I use it for potholders. It isn't the same as the teflon sliders for FMQ.

I'd say if you are going to be FMQ a lot on your regular machine invest the $30. The people who developed the idea need our $$$ support as do the shops that sell the product plus the $$$ save in agravation will have it paying for itself after one project!!

If you can be creative enough to find what you need,something that works.Don't pay for over priced things just because they "say" they are for quilting.Buy what you can and spend the money saved on more fabric.

If you used a Teflon sheet, how would you attach it to the machine? Tape?

Before I bought the slider, I used the clear tablecloth vinyl and taped it with shipping tape. The tape peels back and prevents the quilt from moving well. It has to be replaced constantly. It was a hassle, so now I put the slider over the vinyl and it gives me more surface area for the quilt to glide.

I don't use anything and I have no problem as long as I grease my darning foot once in a while and wear gloves with little rubber nubs. I have done many quilts like this.

I use my teflon sheet a lot! I got mine at Joann's Fabrics and used my 40% off coupon. That took the sting out of the cost.

When the Slider first came out, I bought one and loved it. However I wanted a larger one and found some teflon baking sheets that were much larger on ebay. I got five of them for under $30 and was able to share a couple with some friends and still kept two which covers almost my entire cabinet top. Where there is a will, there is a way!

the teflon sheets stick to the cabinet insert or to the machine insert if using on a table top, and then the slick side allows the quilt to slide..

Someone on another thread just posted that she used Mylar template Sheet. She said she took off the plate traced the hole and then cut it out. The Mylar sheet was only $2! It's worth a try.

Is this the kind of teflon baking sheet you are talking about? I bought one that was an oven liner and it didn't work for me at all. I just can't throw away any more money..

There is another brand called Sew-slip. They are on E-bay and some other sites. A little cheaper than the supreme slider.

I love the Supreme Slider. The adhering side will revive itself when rinsed under running water. All threads and lint will slide off with the water. I have had one for years and it is still like new. So yes it's worth the price to me. Look for online sales.
