Why do you want to use templates? I use them when I'm hand piecing, not so much for machine piecing. Most shapes can be rotary cut. anyway here are a couple of places to buy premade, and very accurate templates:
http://www.ardcotemplates.com/ http://www.emeraldcityfabrics.com/se...the-631/Detail these are the Marti Michell templates OR you could use INKLINGO to print your shapes on fabric. http://lindafranz.com/ I love INKLINGO!! |
When I use templates, which isn't often, I cut paper templates to the finished size. I then place a small piece or two of double-sided tape on the wrong side of the template and place it on the fabric where the piece will cut. Place the ruler with the 1/4" (seam) line on the edge of the template and cut along the outside edge.

Rotary cutters are for cutting with rotary templates/rulers. The mylar or paper templates are for tracing, then cutting. Sadly if you are going to be using paper/mylar templates there is no quick trick.
There are lots of quilt units that you don't need templates for - like making half square triangles, etc. When I see a pattern calling for a unit that I know how to make without templates, I ignore the cutting instructions/templates and go about it my own way. |
If you want thickness glue a few layers of clear plastic together, then I use my paper rotary cutter to cut out the template. This makes it thicker to cut along on fabric, or if still not happy put a ruler on top of template edge and cut.
