First of all, thank you so much for answering my questions. It seems the more I get into this the more questions I have.

Do you buy or make your own templates? Which templates should i have? Any advice? I have just made block and strip pieces so far. I want to try a simple quilt with shapes.
THANKS!

i have been using PCQuilter [robot] with my own designs. lately, though, i want to free-motion quilt. i've thought about cutting my own templates because i prefer original designs so the quilt is all mine :) haven't decided whether to use a knife or hot iron to cut the pattern.

Ardco (Quiltsmith Ltd.) makes wonderful metal templates for quilting. I prefer them because they are "hollow" in the middle, which allows you to mark your 1/4" seam allowance on both the inside and outside edges.

My first teacher taught us to make templates with cereal boxes and freezer paper. I know there are easier ways but I bet it's not as cheap :)

I found templates are one of my most hated methods. I started a "Saturday Sampler" block of the month that used templates and it may stay a UFO forever. I love the fabric though so one morning when I wake up and think I need to put myself thru some special torture I'll work on that quilt.

Here is a tutorial I made showing how easy it is to make templates

If I need to use templates, I prefer ones that I can use a rotary cutter with. So this means buying them LOL

Once you pick out a pattern, then you can usually find a template for sale that matches it :D:D:D

I like the metal ones with the sandpaper on the back! If you are in the market PM me..I have tons I am going to get rid of! Some are for miniature quilt making..books, templates you name it..it has to go!
