Tension problems

When I sew a straight line on my Bernina 440 QE the fabric comes out slightly gathered. I have all my tensions set at factory settings. What is wrong?

Sometimes mine does this and I just slightly elongate the stitch length. I think it is because I am using an older needle, or the fabric is heavier, or because of the weave of the fabric is denser. I also recommend not winding the bobbin to the end of the automatic winder setting.

Check the thread path from the spool to make sure it hasn't wrapped around something. I usually sew with my top tension at the red line or up to the # 5 depending on the thread. Check to see if your thread is a little thicker then what you usually use. Is the spool in the correct position to flow freely? If all looks good on top, it is time to check the bobbin tension. Look at your thread sample and see if the top thread is being pulled to the bottom. Your bobbin tension might be a bit tight.
How long has it been since you put a drop of oil on the bobbin hook? I give mine a drop after about 5 bobbins. If all that fails, change thread, needle and clean your machine and try again.

If you're not using the factory thread you probably will have to adjust the top tension to work with the thread you are using.

how's your needle too? if it is dull it could be pulling...but chances are you just need to loosen the top tension a little bit. also...some thin fabrics need a stabilizer to keep them from puckering with stitching-so if your fabric is really thin/fine you may want to add a lightweight stabilizer.

I would loosen up the tension on the presser foot a bit.

What thread? What size needle? Stitch length? All these things can lead to the issue you hare having.

I haven't seen a new machine that the default settings wasn't for 90/14 needles using poly thread. That is how they are test sewn at the factory.
